“Being able to pursue independent research has been an
amazing experience for me,” says University Fellow Gabe
Sataloff. Sataloff received a Rose Fellowship from St. Lawrence
to do field research in marine biology. He conducted his field
work in San Salvador, Bahamas, where he worked in close association
with Professor Brad Baldwin of biology to design his experiment
and execute the plans to complete it.
“Not only was it an amazing experience to do the actual
research, but we found results that could be published, and we
hope to do so later this year,” Sataloff says. “The
support from everyone at St. Lawrence, from coaches, friends
and my other professors, was unbelievable. People around campus
were genuinely interested in the work I had done and wanted to
know more about it. My football coach had me explain the research
to him, and he got excited when I told him about my findings.
This type of learning environment is pretty rare, and I am lucky
to have found it at St. Lawrence.”
Sataloff hopes to attend graduate school next year, focusing
on marine environmental science and management. He intends to
continue his research and eventually, he says, “I would
like to teach as well.”
