The famous phrase “Speak softly and carry a big stick” describes
Julia Palmateer ’07 in more ways than one. Despite her
quiet nature, she does carry a big stick; in fact, she carries
two.
At the Berkshire School, Palmateer played both ice hockey and
lacrosse. When she arrived at St. Lawrence, she was prepared
for both, something not many student-athletes can dream of doing.
Being a part of the Division I women’s ice hockey team
was thrilling: “I really enjoy the team, my teammates and
the camaraderie,” she explains as she talks about managing
several workouts a week and games every weekend all winter. Last
year, the team advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four, and she immediately
found herself running onto the lacrosse field for the remainder
of that season, playing in six games.
Even though sports are a big part of her life, academics have
always come first. She is majoring in both mathematics and psychology
and has been inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the math honorary.
Both of her sports have also recognized her achievements in the
classroom: she was named to league All-Academic teams in both
ice hockey and lacrosse.
When asked about her plans after graduation, she says softly
and in the best liberal arts mindset, that she isn’t sure,
but she’s excited and ready to dedicate herself to whatever
it will be.
