St.
Lawrence is a small school where students feel free to engage one-on-one
with faculty members in and out of class. I really like the close
relationships that I have with my professors here. The school's
environment provides a nice balance between academic success as
well as for social activities. As a resident of the International
House, I interact with people from many different backgrounds constantly
and get to learn about their cultures.
The University offers opportunities for all undergraduates to engage
in scholarly research and to gain valuable research skills, which
is very good for students preparing for graduate school or research-oriented
careers. As a freshman, I received a St. Lawrence summer fellowship
to conduct research on the effects of land fragmentation on population
and behavioral aspects of small mammals. I also attended a research
conference in New Hampshire, and I have presented my findings on
campus and in New York City.
Students can also take part in activities such as movies, concerts,
cultural presentations, art exhibitions and poetry readings. My
interest in computers began back in Kenya when I worked as a support
programmer for the British American Tobacco Company. At St. Lawrence,
I have continued to pursue this hobby through my work as a student
trainer for the Informational Technology department. I train faculty
and students in many different things such as video and audio editing,
designing web pages and presentations.
St. Lawrence offers a great study abroad program for students to
expand their intellectual and cultural horizons. In the fall semester
I will be studying at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. This
will be a chance for me to take courses in pharmacology that I can
transfer to my major at St. Lawrence. I also plan to study for a
semester at St. Lawrence's Program in Copenhagen, Denmark in the
first semester of my senior year. My dream is to work as an international
pharmaceutical researcher, and I believe that St. Lawrence's liberal
arts background is giving me a good preparation for this.
