We
walked down the street with a crowd of people marching towards the
10-foot fence, chanting and holding signs, banners and puppets.
Thousands of people from around the globe had gathered to exercise
democracy by voicing their opinions about the Free Trade Area of
the Americas. Over 40 St. Lawrence students joined in the fight
for global justice in a hands-on, connected experience in Quebec
City.
This is just one of the many opportunities that I have taken advantage
of at St. Lawrence University. Through the Student Activists for
Global Equity (SAGE) Coalition, I have been able to raise awareness
about political issues not only on campus, but globally as well.
I have been able to tie my interests in social activism into a multi-field
major, a unique opportunity at SLU. I am designing a major in Sociology,
Speech and Theatre, and Global Studies. With a multi-field, you
are able to propose your own curriculum and focus on areas that
suits your interests, even if SLU doesn't offer exactly what you
are looking for. I plan to focus on political theatre, looking at
the way theatre raises awareness about social and global issues,
and to question society and "the way things are."
I plan to extend my major when studying abroad in Kenya, and look
at how street theatre has been used throughout a history of social
struggles. The professors and students here have been extremely
encouraging and helpful, which is why it's great to go to a small
school.
I live in the Coffeehouse, a theme house on campus that brings
live music and free coffee to the campus community every weekend.
The unique theme cottages on campus are a great place to make friends,
play, and live.
