Murphy
Manager of Microcomputer User Services
Information Technology
“When I forget what’s it like to be a student, what
kind of pressure they’re under balancing classes and trying
to have a life, I take another course,” says Rene Murphy.
A lifetime local resident who attended SUNY Canton College of Technology,
she’s been a part of the St. Lawrence community for 12 years.
As a coordinator of student services in the Information Technology
department from 1992 until recently, when she was named manager
of microcomputer user services, she has been in close daily contact
with students. From fixing hardware problems to conducting software
workshops, her staff is a vital part of campus life.
“I don’t know how the admissions staff does it, but
we get some of the best people under the age of 22 on our campus,”
she says. “I feel so fortunate to work here. It’s been
a wonderful gift,” says Murphy of her job. Her office is filled
with pictures of alumni and current students, many of whom she stays
in touch long after their graduation. Murphy’s commitment
to students and their needs earned her the 2002 John P. "Jack"
Taylor Distinguished Career Service Award, presented annually to
the member of the administration who demonstrates high standards
of excellence in services to the University.
