| Catherine L. Jahncke
Associate Professor of Physics
3+2 Engineering Liaison
Catherine Jahncke brings St. Lawrence
a knowledge base combining both engineering and physics. “The line between material
science engineering (MSE), electrical engineering (EE) and solid
state physics can be blurry,” she says. “In graduate
school, I took courses in EE and MSE from faculty members who
had their doctorates in physics.” She is thus well positioned,
as a faculty member in physics, to coordinate St. Lawrence’s
engineering program with seven other institutions.
Through eight
years at St. Lawrence, Jahncke has been involved in two grant
awards, elected to the leadership honorary ODK, named
to the Academic Honor Council and appointed faculty advisor for
the Society of Physics Students.
“
I really enjoy teaching, especially in the laboratory setting,
and I also enjoy working on research, both with students and by
myself,” Jahncke says. “St. Lawrence offers wonderful
opportunities for the faculty to develop new teaching strategies
and new courses. Doing research with students is particularly rewarding
to me.”
In her spare time, Jahncke enjoys playing broomball
with the physics intramural team. She also plays in a bluegrass
band called Grasse
Roots.
