| Fran Grembowicz
Head Softball
and Field Hockey Coach
When Fran Grembowicz joined the St. Lawrence community 11 years
ago as the head women’s basketball coach, she didn’t
expect to stay long. But five years ago, she was asked for help
in expanding the athletics offerings on campus by creating a softball
team. Although she no longer coaches basketball, she remains the
head coach of the softball team, is the head coach of the field
hockey team, and is also the liaison between admissions and the
athletics department.
“I grew up in the generation where people were expected
to do a variety of things,” Grembowicz says. “My favorite
part of working at St. Lawrence is that I have had the opportunity
to wear a lot of hats. This helps me understand my student athletes
better because I know what it’s like to juggle school, sports,
and extracurricular activities.
“I also find the wonderful and open communications that
I have with administrators are extremely rewarding because both
groups are working toward one mission: bringing the best possible
students to St. Lawrence,” she says. “This relationship
is wonderful because so many groups work in concert towards a common
goal.”
Because she is a two-sport coach, Grembowicz says she’s
lucky that she gets to meet more of those “best possible” students
than some of the other coaches on campus. “Knowing a variety
of athletes allows me to be more knowledgeable of the issues in
the athletics department, as well as on campus, and broadens my
perspective,” she says. |
