“I’ve made great friends, am getting a great education,
have continued to play a competitive sport that has always been
one of the most prominent parts of my life, and have made life-long
connections,” says Lindsay Charlebois of her time at St.
Lawrence.
A Dean’s List student, she adds that the faculty
and staff “have
gone out of their way to make my experience at SLU a great one.”
Though
her average day is a hectic one, what with balancing a Division
I sport with her other activities, Charlebois says that
what makes things manageable
is “the people and the ‘SLU’ atmosphere where you can say
hello to someone you’ve never met and get a smile in return,” she
says.
It’s not a big surprise that Charlebois came to St. Lawrence. “Both
my parents graduated from St. Lawrence in 1971, so as a “double-chip” (a “chip” is
a student who has at least one parent who graduated from the University),
the St. Lawrence tradition means even more to me,” she says, adding, “I
plan to earn my master’s in education here. I want to teach elementary
school.”
Preparing for teaching by spending eight hours a week with
the reading and math tutoring program at Canton’s elementary school,
in addition to all her other obligations, is demanding, but Charlebois often
makes time to head
20 minutes down the road to her home near Potsdam. “I love being a
local student,” she says. “I can go home, even just for dinner,
but still have a college life.”
