“The moment I stepped onto campus,” says Adam Casler, “I
knew that this was the place where I needed to be. I remember
admiring all the green space, thinking how different St. Lawrence
was from some of the other schools I was applying to.” But
aesthetics wasn’t the only factor. “During my campus
tour, several students stopped to talk to my tour guide and me,” he
recalls. “They were outgoing and passionate about St. Lawrence.
At that moment, I knew I would be able to excel in this environment.”
Casler has had defining moments both in and out of the classroom. “In
Introduction to American Politics, I learned that every student
has a different perspective on politics and that if I wanted
to be taken seriously, I would have to develop the ability to
clearly support and articulate my viewpoints,” he explains. “Prof.
Alan Draper was a huge help in that endeavor, aiding me in developing
my arguments both written and verbally.”
The lessons he learned in that class apply directly to his involvement
in student government. “This is a group of dedicated students
who want to make sure the student voice is represented in every
major decision,” he says. “I have seen a huge change
in the dynamic--senators are more likely to engage in dialogue
with the people they are representing and more likely to engage
in debate on every issue that comes before Thelmo.”
After St. Lawrence, Adam hopes to pursue a master’s in
student affairs in higher education and a Ph.D. in higher education
administration.
