A North Country native, Kira Cambridge had a lot of exposure
to St. Lawrence in high school, as an Upward Bound student, a
Talented Juniors program participant and an attendee of the Young
Writers Conference. But it was the beautiful campus and strong
psychology program that clinched her decision to enroll.
As a McNair scholar and a member of Chi Omega, Kira has found
a blend of scholarship and sisterhood that has enhanced her experience
at St. Lawrence.
“Last summer, I wrote three short stories based on research
about growing up female in the North Country,” she says. “I
wrote about feminism and lack of progress in the microcosm of
St. Lawrence County that I grew up in. It was an amazing and
liberating experience for me and I am extremely grateful for
the support I received in the fusion of my love for creative
writing, psychology and the mentality of the area in which I
grew up.
“Another crucial event in my time at St. Lawrence was
pledging Chi Omega,” she continues. “I was having
a difficult time adjusting to being on campus. I didn’t
really feel as though I fit in anywhere. Being a sister in Chi
O has helped me find another place to call home.”
After St. Lawrence, Cambridge is considering Syracuse University ’s
Master’s in Social Work program. Eventually she hopes to
complete a Ph.D. in marriage and family counseling.
