| Holly Steuerwald ’89
Major: English
Profession: Director of Alumni Affairs, Albany
Law School
Alumni Council member Holly Steuerwald
personifies the notion that the liberal arts prepares one for life-long
learning. After graduating from St. Lawrence, she acquired her MA
in education at St. Lawrence. She then went to Albany Law School
and earned a law degree. Today, she is director of alumni affairs
at Albany Law School, after taking ayear off to complete pre-requisite
courses for a possible future career in veterinary science.
“I always loved horses,” she says. “One of the
biggest reasons for my choosing St. Lawrence was its strong riding
program. Back then I didn’t see my love for horses as something
that could be transformed into a profession. Now I realize that
it was St. Lawrence that gave me an opportunity to acquire skills
in many fields and be able to transform them into any profession
later on in life.”
Steuerwald is a firm believer in a liberal arts education, believing
it provides a student with the quantity and quality of knowledge
applicable to any field. It was at St. Lawrence that she developed
her interest in education, leading her first positions in higher
education.
“I’m happy to be able to consider something that I
was interested in for many years,” Steuerwald says. “I
am comfortable thinking about such a change mostly because the education
that I received at St. Lawrence never limited me to one thing for
my whole life. It opened the world of opportunities to me and gave
me just enough preparation to pursue anything I want.”
