Katherine A. Lord says she loved traveling even before she came
to St. Lawrence. After she discovered that St. Lawrence offered
a wide variety of options in international study programs, she
couldn’t let the opportunity to travel some more pass her
by. Katherine went to Japan and, although living there wasn’t
always easy, she had the time of her life.
“Japan was the place where I learned some of the most important
life lessons,” she says, “It took time to adjust to
the language, the new culture and a totally different lifestyle.
Everything from food to social interactions was different from
what I was used to. When you are put in such circumstances, you
learn to be patient and more accepting of other people. You learn
to look at everything from a philosophical point of view. After
I came back to St. Lawrence my outlook on many things changed completely.
I started appreciating things that I took for granted before my
semester in Japan.”
To expose herself to diversity on campus Katherine moved into
the International House. She enjoyed getting to know different
cultures through her interactions with international students. “I had
an amazing time while living in the I-House,” she says, “The
place was full of people from such different backgrounds and with
such different lifestyles that it could never get boring. I developed
a strong friendship with my roommate, a girl from Finland , and we
still keep in touch.”
