Beth Lomanto ’02, M’03
Physics Teacher, South Colonie (NY) High School
Beth Lomanto comes from a family of St. Lawrence alumni. Her
mother and two aunts--as well as several of her high school teachers--graduated
from St. Lawrence and urged her to attend. She did, not only
for her undergraduate degree but for her master’s as well.
Her undergraduate major was history, with a double minor in physics and education;
she had hopes of becoming a secondary school teacher, and those hopes have
been fulfilled. “I have interests in many fields, so the liberal arts
education was perfect for me because I could explore and be familiar with a
variety of subjects,” she says.
Speaking of her graduate studies at St.
Lawrence, Lomanto says that the program was extremely flexible in accommodating
her interests: “There are so
many options. My master’s program in education was challenging and was
great preparation for teaching. I liked the opportunities for independent work
and the intense pace.”
A native of Queensbury, NY, Lomanto was active
in all aspects of student life in both her undergraduate and graduate days
at St. Lawrence. She was an intern
in University Communications, conducted research for the athletics division,
and was an instructional volunteer in a high school physics classroom—all
good preparation, she says, for life after college.
