Kerper '2000
Profession: Senior Communications Specialist at the National Rifle
Association of America
Hometown: Fleetwood, Pennsylvania
Joe Kerper says he was drawn to St. Lawrence the moment that he
set foot on campus because “It fit my vision of what the
small liberal arts school should truly represent.” Initially
unsure of what his major would be, his first interest in the sciences
gave way to a passion for writing and communication and eventually
led to a major in English.
Joe was an active member of campus life;
he wrote for The Hill News, eventually serving as editor-in-chief,
studied abroad in
England for a semester, and also took part in outdoor activities
such as hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and winter camping.
Now, when he’s not working or traveling for the National
Rifle Association, Joe enjoys competitive shooting, fly fishing,
fly tying, woodworking, and photography.
He attributes a key part
of his academic formation at St. Lawrence to his internship and
assistantship in University communications. “Both
experiences helped me grow as a writer, and more specifically,
as a critical thinker, a part of my liberal arts education that
has prepared me for any job that could ever come my way, ” he
explains.
Currently, with the NRA, Joe does graphic design as well as writing
and editing for magazines and press releases. He is also a photographer
for advertising and other promotional work. He serves St. Lawrence
as a member of the Alumni Executive Council.
