Double major: Government and economics
Profession: attorney
at Bond, Schoeneck & King,
PLLC, Syracuse , NY
Alumni Council member John Callahan says he was interested in
becoming a lawyer long before coming to St. Lawrence. He was fascinated
by history and politics while in high school and wanted to continue
studying these subjects at St. Lawrence. The only obstacle was
his doubts concerning his own academic skills.
“I knew St. Lawrence was challenging academically, and as much
as I was willing to take that challenge, I wasn't sure how I well
I would respond to it,” says Callahan
However, as soon as his freshman year started it was obvious to
him that it was time to set aside those fears. “From the very beginning
of my college career I was put on the right track,” says Callahan. “Not
only did my professors inspire me to do my very best, I was fortunate
to have an advisor who steered me in the right direction.”
In the years following, Callahan's fascination with government and
politics grew even stronger as he worked with his professors. Following
his graduation from St. Lawrence, he earned his law degree from Albany
Law School in 1981 and entered his career path as a trial lawyer.
He has been recognized by his peers for his expertise as a litigator.
Throughout his career he has continued his avid interest in politics
that was fostered at St. Lawrence by working in the trenches in numerous
political campaigns.
