SAINT TRACK PROGRAMS WORK TOGETHER FOR SUCCESS          

St. Lawrence University’s men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field programs have been dominant in the Liberty League and among the best Division III programs in the Northeast in the last several seasons under the guidance of Saint Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mike Howard.

The coaching organization of the track and field programs will take a new direction beginning in the 2008-09 season as while Howard will continue in his role as overall director of the teams, long-time assistant John Newman has been named men’s head indoor and outdoor track and field coach and Kate Curran has been appointed to the new position of head women’s indoor and outdoor track and field coach. In addition, Matt Kuenzel has been named head throws coach and strength and conditioning coach for both the men’s and women’s teams while Melissa DeRan and Colleen Schramm will be assistants for both teams.

While the men’s and women’s teams each have their own head coach, the combined team  system which has worked so well for the Saints since the introduction of women’s track and field in the early 1990’s will continue. The teams will run the same schedules, share workouts and all of the coaches in the program will work with both male and female athletes in various events.

“Having the two teams compete and work together has helped both the men and the women over recent years,” said Howard. “We have built an excellent support system in which the men and women help each other in practice and training and are urging the others on when they are not competing themselves. “
