In his seven years at the helm of the St. Lawrence men's and women's tennis programs, Jeremy Freeman has ensured that the Saints remain among the elite Division III collegiate tennis teams in the nation. Freeman has instilled in his players a strong work ethic and competitive spirit that have resulted in both team success and individual accolades.

 

Under Freeman's direction, St. Lawrence has posted a record of 118-102 as the Saints are one of the top teams in the Liberty League each year. Freeman has been recognized numerous times for his success as the team's head coach. In 2001, he was named UCAA Men's Coach of the Year and in 2003, the UCAA named him Women's Coach of the Year. Freeman received the Bernie McKinnon Coach of the Year Award for the 2003-04 season amd in 2005, the Liberty League recognized Freeman as the Women's Coach of the Year.

 

The 2005-06 campaign marked one of the most successful seasons at St. Lawrence. The Saints men's team finished with a 10-7 record that included a six match win stretch during the season. The Saints swept four matches by a score of 7-0. The women's team finished the 2005-06 season second in the Liberty League with a record of 14-4. They were ranked as high as 11th in the Northeast of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Freeman coached Anne Moulin and Kirsten Lannon to the ITA National Small College Championship, one of only two doubles teams in St. Lawrence history to advance to that level.

 

In the 2004-2005 season, Freeman led the women's team to a 12-6 record and a ranking of 23rd in the ITA Northeast region. The Saints captured three titles at the William Smith Invitational that concludes the season. On the men's side, the Saints finished at 8-11 and took third place in the 2005 Liberty League Championship. In the 2003-2004 season Freeman guided his women's team to their best ever finish in his tenure at 13-3, finishing third in the UCAA Tournament and a North East ITA regional ranking of #16. The men finished their year in impressive fashion with a 14-7 match record, which included a run of 5 consecutive match victories of 7-0. The men's team finished the year third at the UCAA Tournament. Over the past 5 years Freeman has coached 10 ITA Scholar-Athletes and numerous recipients of All-Conference and All-State honors.

 

A 1996 graduate of St. Lawrence University, Freeman was a member of the men's tennis team as an undergraduate. Freeman has an extensive background in tennis coaching and instruction. He has worked as an assistant tennis professional at Court One Athletic Club in Okemos, MI and spent three years as the head tennis professional for the Lake Placid Resort in Lake Placid, NY.

 

In 1999, Freeman completed his MS in Kinesiology from Michigan State University and returned to his alma mater in August after serving as the assistant athletic director and men's and women's tennis coach at Earlham College, leading both his teams to their most successful seasons in several years. An instructor in tennis skills classes and wellness at Michigan State where he earned his maters degree in Kinesiology, he also coached varsity boys tennis at Everett High School in Lansing, MI prior to his position at Earlham.

ASSISTANT COACH HILARY TYLER

The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s tennis programs added Hilary Tyler of Grand Junction, CO to the coaching staff for the 2008-09 season.


Tyler is a 2008 graduate of Colorado State University where she majored in Speech Communications with minors in Spanish and Political Science.  During her time at Colorado State, she played on the Division I tennis team for two seasons, studied abroad in Granada, Spain, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club and was the 2007 Waterpik Excellence in Education Award recipient.


As a senior on the Rams’ tennis squad, Tyler played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and was elected the team’s captain.  She was All-Mountain West Conference Singles and Doubles in 2007-08 and owns the Colorado State University record for doubles wins in a season.


Tyler has a solid background in coaching tennis, which includes serving as the Assistant Tennis Coach at Rocky Mountain High School and as the Assistant Teaching Pro at the Lewis Tennis Academy at Fort Collins.  Tyler was also a Counselor for Tennis and Basketball at the Colorado State University Sports Camps.
