SAINTS ENJOY WINNING SEASON

AND CONFERENCE SUCCESS IN 2008

St. Lawrence University's women's soccer program had an outstanding 2008 season, finishing with a 10-5-3 overall record, their first winning record in five years, and a 3-3-1 conference mark. Their efforts in Liberty League play landed them a spot in the 2008 conference tournament, their first postseason appearance in half a decade as first year head coach Franco Bari guided the Scarlet and Brown to their 29th season of women's intercollegiate soccer at St. Lawrence.

The Saints women's program started in 1980, going 7-3-0 under the guidance of coach Bernie McKinnon, who coached the team from its inception through 1995, taking the Saints to NCAA appearances in both 1986 and 1989. Cathy Moss coached the Saints for two seasons before the arrival of Deb Biche, who had a 104-73-10 record in her ten years with the Saints.

Bari set the bar high for himself and his team in 2008, as the team went toe-to-toe with nationally-ranked opponents all season as St. Lawrence earned both regional and national rankings throughout the campaign.

The Scarlet and Brown set records for victories in the 1999, 2000 and 2001 seasons and won the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association championship in 2001. They have also been regular participants in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournaments in previous years and have been consistently strong competitors in their conference.

The Saints compete in the Liberty League Conference, along with Clarkson, Hamilton, Rensselaer, Skidmore, Union, Vassar and William Smith. The top four teams after a regular-season round robin meet at the home field of the team with the best conference regular season record to determine the Liberty League entry in the NCAA Division III field with a single-elimination tournament. The Liberty League is one of the toughest women's soccer conferences in the Northeast and has been well represented in NCAA play over the past several seasons, with three teams making the NCAA Tournament in 2008.

St. Lawrence has had several individual standouts in the past several seasons, including Lauren Sischo '09, who was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Third Team after maintaining one of the highest GPAs among women's soccer players in the region. Liz Masterson '05 became just the second first-team national All America in Saint soccer history in 2003, while Meredith Eisenhut, the Saints' all-time scoring leader, was a regional All America and was the first woman in Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association history to be Player of the Year in three sports in the same year, earning those honors in soccer, basketball and softball. Leah Yandow '06 joined Masterson on the regional All America team in the fall of 2003, earning third team honors, while Nikki Lopez '05 joined Masterson on the All New York State team. The program's first All-America was Laura LoGiudice, who was named an NSCAA All-America in both 1999 and 2000.
