Dec. 13: Devon Cain, Leah Yandow, Zippy Podhaizer, Julie Giller, and Margaret Tansey earned Liberty Leauge All-Academic Honors for their efforts in the classroom. Seniors Cain and Yandow are Psychology and Biology Majors, respectively. Representing the junior class, Podhaizer is a Biochemistry Major. Giller is an Economics/Math Major, and Tansey is an English Major. They are both sophomores. YANDOW EARNS NYSWCAA ALL-STAR STATUS Dec. 5: Leah Yandow was named to the NYSWCAA All-Star team for the second straight year. Yandow was one of 11 defenders in the state chosen for the honor. She started all 15 games for the Saints and contributed 2 game winning goals.
FOUR SAINTS EARN LIBERTY LEAGUE ALL-STAR STATUS Nov. 3: Leah Yandow, Zippy Podhaizer, Carly Draper, and Lauren Sischo all earned Liberty League recognition in voting that was done by the coaches.
First Team
Leah Yandow started 15 games this season, including all 6 conference games. She has 2 game winning goals, and has provided leadership from the backfield all year.
Second Team
Zippy Podhaizer is a steady force in the backfield for the Saints. She routinely wins balls and helps distribute passes up field. Podhaizer has started every game for SLU.
Honorable Mention
Carly Draper has started every game in the net for the Saints. She has 7 shutouts on the year, and a .810 save percentage. Draper is first in the conference in saves (conference only and overall), fourth in saves per game (conference and overall games), second in shutouts (overall, 5th conference only), second in shutouts per game (overall).
First year Lauren Sischo was a force for the Saints this season, tying the team lead of 3 goals. She started every game for SLU, including all 6 in league.
SAINTS WIN LAST GAME, 1-0 Oct. 29: The St. Lawrence women’s soccer team beat Elmira today, 1-0, to finish the year 6-8-2 overall, 1-6-0 in the Liberty League. Elmira is now 4-12 overall.
The Saints were in the lead at the end of the first half because of a goal in the 29 th minute by Julie Giller. Giller made a defender miss at the top of the goalie box, and found the upper left corner of the net past the reach of Elmira goalie Meaghan Doherty.
At the end of the first half, Elmira had taken 7 shots to SLU’s 4. Saint goalie Carly Draper had already saved 5 balls in the net. Doherty knocked down 2 St. Lawrence chances in the first 45 minutes.
SLU would hold on to their first half lead throughout the second half, and end the game 1-0. Both teams took 11 shots on the day, and Elmira narrowly edged the Saints in corners at 3-2.
For the day, Draper ended with 5 saves for the Saints, Doherty finished with 7 saves for Elmira.
SAINTS FALL TO RPI, 1-0 TROY, N.Y. – Kerry Reilly scored the lone goal as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) defeated St. Lawrence 1-0 in the final Liberty League contest for both teams. With the victory the Red Hawks improve to 4-10-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the league. St. Lawrence is now 5-8-2 overall and 1-6-0.
Off an indirect kick from senior Rebecca Primm, Reilly put a perfectly timed header into the net at 9:03 of the first half for her second goal of the season. The teams battled through a scoreless second half in which Rensselaer outshot the Saints, 5-1.
For the game, RPI finished with 10 shots, including six on goal, compared to four for the Saints, including two on net.
Senior Tara Marandino made two saves in Rensselaer’s net for the win. Junior Carly Draper finished with five saves.
The Saints next game against Elmira has been changed to a home game for SLU, and will be played at Sandy MacAllaster Field at 2:30 on Saturday, Oct. 29.
SAINTS GET BETTER OF POTSDAM ON ROAD
FIRST PLACE UNION PUSHES 5 Oct. 22: The St. Lawrence Women’s Soccer team lost to Union, who is first in the Liberty League, 5-0 today at Sandy MacAllaster Field. With the loss, SLU falls to 4-7-2 overall, 1-5-0 in league. Union is now 13-1-2 overall, 6-0-1 in the Liberty League.
In the 13 th minute of the game, Caitlin Cuozzo scored on an assist from Erika Eisenhut. Eisenhut sent a ball into the box from the right corner of the field to Cuozzo who then found the lower left corner of the net for the go ahead go. By the end of the first half, the score was 1-0 Union.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Marissa VanWoeart scored an unassisted goal when she slipped past a SLU defender and buried it in the upper left corner for the second goal of the day. Over 12 minutes later, Eisenhut scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-0 Dutchwomen. Cassandra Mariani added two goals within two minutes of each other on assists from Eisenhut and Molly Flanagan to finish the game.
Draper notched 12 saves in the net for the Saints, as Union took 26 shots on the day. Dutchwomen goalie Julie Gawronski made 3 saves, and SLU took a total 4 shots in the game. Union also led in corners, with a 9 to 1 advantage.
The Saints next game will be this Wednesday at Potsdam at 4:00pm.
SKIDMORE TOPS SAINTS, 2-0 Oct. 21: The St. Lawrence University Women’s Soccer team lost today 2-0 to the visiting Thoroughbreds of Skidmore. For the year, the Saints are now 4-6-2, and 1-4-0 in the Liberty League. Skidmore is now 11-4-1 overall, 3-2-1 in league.
At just under 53 minutes, Skidmore’s Cari Dugan headed the goal into the right side of the net on a cross from teammate Morgan Cadwell who sent the ball into the box from the left corner of the field.
In the 66 th minute, Cadwell scored a goal of her own when Anna Cerio threaded a ball through the box to her in front of the line. Cadwell then found the lower right corner of the net to make it 2-0 Thoroughbreds.
For the game, SLU took 5 shots to Skidmore’s 14. Skidmore also had the advantage on corners at 7 to 2. Carly Draper made 4 saves in the net for the Saints, and Liza Mills notched 2 saves for the Thoroughbreds.
The Saints will host Union tomorrow at 2:00pm at Sandy MacAllaster Field to close out their home schedule.
SAINTS FALL TO ONEONTA Oct. 15: The St. Lawrence Women’s Soccer team lost on the road to a strong Oneonta team, 6-1. For the season, SLU is now 4-5-2, and 1-3-0 in the Liberty League. Oneonta is now 13-1-1.
Oneonta scored their first goal just over three minutes into the game, and added two more before first year Zoe Bludevich scored an unassisted goal at 31 minutes. By the end of the half, the score was 4-1. Oneonta would add two more to close the door on the Saints.
Overall, Oneonta took 33 shots to SLU’s 3. They also took 13 corners, and did not let the Saints have any. St. Lawrence goalkeeper Carly Draper made an amazing 12 saves on the day.
SLU will play Skidmore at home on Oct. 21 st at 4:00pm to return to league play.
SAINTS TIE POWERHOUSE ITHACA, 0-0 Oct. 14: The St. Lawrence Women’s Soccer team played to a 0-0 today against regional powerhouse Ithaca in a non-conference away game. The Saints are now 4-4-2 on the year, and 1-3-0 in league action. Ithaca is now 10-1-2 overall.
For the game, Ithaca outshot SLU 22-4, and thanks to 7 goalie saves from Carly Draper, the Saints handed the Bombers their third non-win of the year. Ithaca goalie Aimee Meacham made 3 stops on the day.
The Saints will play Oneonta tomorrow on the road at 1:00pm.
VASSAR TOPS SAINTS 2-1 IN OVERTIME POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 7, 2005) -- The Vassar women's soccer emerged from both an overtime period and the pouring rain with a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence. The win seemed in doubt when the Saints found the net to tie the score with less then five minutes in regulation, but senior captain Ashley Wilhite found an open shot in the extra period to give her team their second straight one-goal Liberty League victory.
The Saints will face RPI tomorrow on the road at 4:00pm.
SAINTS DROP 2-1 DECISION TO NAZARETH Oct. 1: The St. Lawrence women’s soccer team lost to regional powerhouse Nazareth today2-1 today at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
Nazareth’s Kristina Cristofori beat a couple Saint defenders, and found the bottom right corner of the net with 1:53 left in the first half to break the 0-0 tie. SLU’s best chance in the first half came off of a corner kick by Alana Mahoney. Mahoney booted the ball in front of the goal and it bounced around until first year Zoe Bludevich got a foot on it, but Nazareth goalie Shannon Burns dove on it for the save.
At the end of the first half, the Saints had taken 6 shots to Nazareth’s 7, and each goalie had recorded 3 saves a piece. The Golden Flyers were awarded 4 corner kicks to SLU’s 1 chance.
In the 75 th minute of the game, the action picked up when Nazareth’s Julie Birbilis booted a corner kick into the goalie box, where it met Rachel Cushman who got a foot on it, but Sam Bealer came up huge for the Saints and earned the team save by clearing it at the last second.
Then, just three minutes later, Cristofori threaded a ball through to Cushman who found the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-0 Nazareth.
They would need both goals, as in the 83 rd minute, first year Lauren Sischo shot a ball from 40 yards out that bounced off the crossbar, and went in. The Saints had another chance before that when Zippy Podhaizer booted a free kick into the goalie box where Mallory Wilder was waiting, but booted it just high for the near miss.
With just 15 seconds remaining, Leah Yandow launched a free kick from 30 yards out that just cleared the crossbar and would have tied the game.
On the day, Saints goalkeeper Carly Draper saved 7 goals; Shannon Burns and Holly Sands combined for 6 saves for Nazareth.
The Saints are back in action on Oct. 7 th at Vassar at 4:00pm to return to Liberty League action. On the year, SLU is now 4-3-1; Nazareth moves to 7-3-0.
SAINTS TIE PLATTSBURGH AT HOME Sept. 28: Two overtimes would not be enough for either team to earn a win, as the St. Lawrence women’s soccer team fought Plattsburgh for 110 minutes of scoreless action today at MacAllaster Field.
Lauren Sischo had a chance with 9 minutes left in the second overtime, but it sailed just wide. Both teams had chances, with the Saints taking 6 shots on goal, and the Cardinals taking 10 shots on goal.
At the end of regulation, the score remained knotted at 0-0. SLU had taken 11 shots to Plattsburgh’s 14, even though the Cardinals had taken a startling 11 corners to the Saints 1 chance. Draper had 7 saves, Larocke made 6 by the end of 90 minutes.
The Saints will face Nazareth on Saturday at home at 2:00pm. With the tie, SLU moves to 4-2-1 on the year, Plattsburgh moves 4-4-1 for the season.
SAINTS LOSE 0-1 DECISION TO HAMILTON Sept. 24: The St. Lawrence Women’s Soccer team lost today to Hamilton 1-0 on the road. They are now, 4-2 overall, and 1-2 in the Liberty League. With the win, Hamilton moves to 5-0 on the year, and 2-0 in conference.
Hamilton’s Liz Roberts scored the only goal of the game on a header from a corner kick at 23:05, and it would be enough, as goalies Katie Plummer and Caitlin McGilley combined for 3 saves on the day. Carly Draper grabbed 2 saves on the day for SLU.
Overall, both teams were tied in shots at 9 a piece. First year Lauren Sischo took 4 shots on the day, and senior captains Leah Yandow and Devon Cain each took 2 shots. It was a physical game with 20 total fouls; 13 committed by Hamilton, and 7 by the Saints.
The Saints will be back in action at home on Sept. 28 th against Plattsburgh at 4:00pm in a non-conference match-up.
SAINTS FIND FIRST LOSS ON ROAD Sept. 23: The St. Lawrence women’s soccer team lost today to conference rival William Smith 2-0. This was the Saints first loss on the year, and their record now stands at 4-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 in the Liberty League.
Just over 10 minutes into the game, William Smith’s Alexandra Rieben scored on an assist from Steph Gridley. Then in the 18 th minute, Gridley would get one of her own on a pass from Johanna Murphy.
The Saints held the Herons after that, but could not find goals on their own to earn the win.
Saint goalie Carly Draper made 9 saves on the day. William Smith goalie Nikki Dudley earned 1 save.
SLU is back in action tomorrow at Hamilton at 2:00pm to continue their Liberty League schedule.
SULLIVAN EARNS LEAGUE HONOR Sept. 20: Lindsey Sullivan earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors after scoring 2 goals and adding an assist last week to help the Saints earn two more wins, and remain undefeated. She scored the game tying goal with 1:45 left to push overtime against Cortland on Saturday, and assisted on the first goal of the game. Sullivan also scored on Wednesday against Clarkson. She has started all 4 games this season. SAINTS WIN IN DRAMATIC FASHION TO STAY UNDEFEATED Sept. 17: Senior Captain Leah Yandow scored in double overtime on a free kick to steal the victory for the Saints, and keep them a perfect 4-0-0 on the year. Yandow punched the ball that was placed 30 yards out over the outstretched hands of Cortland goalie Katie Killion for the win. With the loss, Cortland moves to 3-2 on the year.
The first half was not an omen of what would come of the game, as it ended tied at 0-0. The most exciting play of the half came with approximately 15 minutes remaining. First year Lauren Sischo drove a ball from the top of the goalie box toward the top right corner of the net, but Cortland goalie, Katie Killion, drove and redirected the ball enough to earn the save. By the end of the first half, the Saints and Red Dragons remained knotted at 0-0, and SLU had taken 6 shots to Cortland’s 7.
Four goals were scored in the second half, and SLU’s Whitney Huse started it all in the 52 nd minute with a chip into the lower left corner of the goal on assists from Erika Gutfreund and Lindsey Sullivan.
Just 3 minutes after SLU had scored to go ahead, Cortland came right back and Katie Trivisonno scored on an assist from Kelsey Geary. At 26:20, Cortland’s Kayla Sweet created a one-on-one with Carly Draper who was in the net for the Saints. Draper came out and made a sliding save to preserve the tie.
In the 80 th minute, Cortland’s Mandy Womelsdorf received a cross from teammate Marie Valentino and drove it into the net for the lead.
The most dramatic goal of the second half came with less than 2 minutes remaining in regulation and the Saints down by a goal. First year Lindsey Sullivan booted a ball from 40 yards out on the left side of the field over the head of Killion for the tie.
On the day, Draper earned 9 saves for SLU. Killion notched 5 saves in the loss.
The Saints will return to action at William Smith on Sept. 23 rd at 4:00pm, then at Hamilton on Sept. 24 th at 2:00pm to continue the Liberty League season.
SAINTS BLANK CLARKSON, 3-0 Sept. 14: In their first home contest of the year, the St. Lawrence Women’s Soccer team shutout rival Clarkson 3-0 to remain undefeated and earn their third straight shutout in as many attempts. With the loss, Clarkson falls to 2-3 on the year. This was the first Liberty League contest of the season for both teams.
In the 37 th minute of play, senior Ashley Monus scored on a ball that was being batted around the goalie box. After ricocheting off of a Clarkson defender, Monus booted it past Clarkson goalie Meagan Emlaw to claim the lead for the Saints.
Clarkson’s best chance to score came with 4 minutes left in the first half when Alicia Chase crossed the ball in front of the net, but Megan Sanderson was a step behind the ball and it bounced out of play.
In the second half, SLU jumped on the whistle to score in the 45 th minute of play when Erika Gutfreund crossed a ball through the box to Lindsey Sullivan who got all of her foot on it and drove it into the upper right corner of the net.
First year Lauren Sischo added another at 54:10 on Gutfreund’s second assist of the day. Gutfreund sent it into the box from the right corner of the Clarkson backfield, and Sischo chipped it over the Clarkson goalie and into the net.
On the day, Emlaw played just under 60 minutes in the net for the Golden Knights and saved 3 shots on goal. Carly Draper earned 3 saves in her third shutout performance of the year. Overall, SLU took 14 shots to Clarkson’s 6, even though Clarkson earned more corner kicks at 3 to 1.
The Saints are back in action in a non-league contest this Saturday at 2:00pm vs. Cortland at home on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
ST. LAWRENCE WINS LOTTO NORTH COUNTRY CLASSIC
Carly Draper made four saves for her second straight shutout and was selected to the All-Tournament team for St. Lawrence. Also named to the All-Tournament team for the Saints were Zippy Podhaizer, Lauren Sischo, who scored Saturday’s goal for the Saints, and Whitney Huse.
OVER PLYMOUTH STATE Sept. 3: In the second game of the opening round of the Lotto Classic, St. Lawrence University picked up a 1-0 victory, downing Plymouth State .
Carly Draper made two saves for the shutout for St. Lawrence while Hayley Quinones made eight stops in net for the Panthers.
CIFUENTES WILL ASSIST IN WOMEN’S SOCCER IN 2005
Cifuentes will assist the women’s program after working on the men’s side this past season. He also worked with the men while pursuing his graduate degree, a stint which included the 1999 run to the NCAA Division III National Championship. Before returning to St. Lawrence last season he taught and coached at the Taft School, taking his soccer team to the New England prep school semifinals. He also taught at the Elwood Middle School and John Glenn High School on Long Island and coached the middle school soccer team.He has trained youth soccer teams on Long Island and has coached at a number of soccer camps. Neil is an experienced Coerver Coaching Instructor.
