SAINTS
WIN ANNUAL TOURNAMENT
Aug. 31- The Saints, 2-0-0, continued their domination
during the North Country Classic Tournament as they beat Adrian
College 11-0 earning them a first place finish.
Five women were named to the All-Tournament team including freshman
Zippy Podhaizer, senior Kate Adams and sophomores Leah Yandow, Sarah
Skinner and Ashley Monus.
The Saints blew it open early, scoring four goals in the first
9:25 of the game, two of them by Adams, who finished the game with
three goals and an assist. Skinner added two goals and an assist,
Tori Kohn and Liz Masterson scored two goals each, Nikki Lopez had
a goal and an assist and Monus added a goal. Carly Draper recorded
her second straight shutout, but did not need to make a save as
the Saints outshot Adrian 29-0 with two Adrian goaltenders combining
for 11 saves.
"This game gave us a chance to look at the younger players
and see how well they worked together. Zippy did a wonderful job
and
solidified her spot on the field," head coach Deb Biche said.
St. Lawrence scored 17 goals in the two games and outshot the opposition
62-1 en route the tournament championship. The Saints will face
a tougher challenge next week when perennial power Cortland State
visits Canton for a non league game at 2 p.m. Saturday on MacAllaster
Field.
"They are a big time opponent. We'll have to work hard this
week to be prepared for them," Biche said.
DEBUT
STRONG IN SEASON OPENER
Aug. 30- The Saint women's soccer team was able to
walk away from game one of the North Country Classic with a sigh
of relief as they beat Olivet College 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Devon Cain opened the scoring off a pass
from senior Tori Kohn for the Saints, now 1-0, 17 minutes into the
first half while just two minutes later sophomore Sarah Skinner
scored an unassisted goal.
Midway through the second half the Saints were able
to score three goals within a nine minute time period. Sophomore
Ashley Monus scored one goal and freshman Samantha Bealer connected
twice. Junior Nicole Lopez scored the final goal for the Saints
as senior Jen Giller had three assists in the game.
