FIVE SAINTS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

May 1: The Liberty League recognized the St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team for its outstanding improvements and efforts thus far this season on Thursday, naming five Saints to the 2008 All-Conference Team while awarding first year Kim Morse (Peaks Island, ME/Yarmouth)with the title of Liberty League Rookie of the Year for her notable contributions to the Scarlet and Brown in her rookie campaign.

Senior co-captain Alanna Waters (Darien, CT/Taft) and junior Amanda Forbes (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) were both named to the Liberty League Second Team, while Morse, sophomore Mary Jane Sweetland (Hopewell, NJ/Stuart Country Day) and senior co-captain Michaela Wipfler (Portland, ME/Deering) were each Honorable Mentions.

Morse led all Liberty League first year players in total points (47) this season and was second in goals scored (39), also placing in the top ten among all league players in both categories. The second-leading scorer for the Saints, she ranked first on the team in game-winning goals (3) and caused turnovers (13). Morse was recognized as Liberty League Rookie of the Week on March 24, following a 12-goal weekly performance that included two game-winners in three games.

Waters has etched her name in the St. Lawrence record books this season, as she has led the Saints offense with a career-high 79 points and leads the Liberty League in both assists with 48 and in number of points per game (5.27). The senior attack shattered the school record for number of assists in a season, previously set at 34, and currently holds the third place spot for number of points scored in a single season in the history of the program. Waters also tallied three game-winning goals throughout her senior campaign.

Forbes continued to be a stand out for St. Lawrence on both ends of the field in her junior season, tallying a career high 44 points (41 goals, 3 assists) while picking up 17 ground balls and controlling a team-high 51 draws, a number that ranks her second in the conference in draw control wins. Her 41 goals not only leads the Saints, but also puts her in third place in total goals for the 2008 season in the conference. Her efforts in the final week of conference play landed her a spot on the WomensLacrosse.com Division III Player of the Week list.

Sweetland started in each of the Saints' 15 games and scored the game-winner against Rensselaer in 2OT. She had 21 goals and three assists for 24 points this season. The sophomore's efforts off the field earned her conference All-Academic honors.

Wipfler had another outstanding season for St. Lawrence as she anchored the Saints defense, starting in each game and picking up a career-high 28 ground balls, while causing 10 turnovers, also a career-high.

The Saints have enjoyed an impressive season under the leadership of Head Coach Jodi Canfield and Assistant Coach Mariah Casserly, who landed the Saints in the Liberty League Tournament for the first time since 2005 behind a 5-3 conference record. The Saints showed dramatic improvements from last season's 6-8 record, jumping to 11-4 overall, their best mark since 2003.

St. Lawrence will travel to Clinton, NY this evening to face Liberty League Regular Season Champion and nationally-ranked Hamilton College on Friday with the first draw scheduled for 12:00pm.
