2004-2005 Stories SAINTS RACE WELL AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS May 2: The Women's Crew team posted their best showing ever at the New York State Championships in Whitney Point, N.Y. this weekend.
The Women's Novice Women 8+ finished second behind Ithaca in their heat and then finished fourth in the grand final behind Army, Ithaca and Skidmore. They beat league opponent Vassar and Division I Marist. The 8s races were very fast as lots of crews did not enter them, instead entering 4s, so the speed was very condensed.
LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS CANCELLED Apr. 23: The 2005 Liberty League Crew Championships have been cancelled due to unsafe conditions on the course on the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, N.Y. U.S. Rowing officials declared the course unsafe due to wind and rough water. The regatta will not be rescheduled and no league championship will be awarded this season.
VARSITY 8 BOAT EARNS LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS Apr. 18: On Monday afternoon, the women varsity 8 boat was named the Boat of the Week by the Liberty League. The boat raced to their third and fourth wins of the season this weekend. Against Union on Saturday on the Mohawk River, they beat Union by 12 seconds, finishing in 7:02. On Sunday against Hamilton on the Erie Canal, they won in 7:07.79, one second faster than Hamilton.
The Saints will hit the water again this weekend on Saturday, April 23 as St. Lawrence hosts the 2005 Liberty League Crew Championships in Waddington, N.Y. Competition begins at 8:30 a.m.
VARSITY 8 SWEEPS WEEKEND Apr. 18 – The Saints Varsity 8+ raced to a 12 second victory over Union on the Mohawk River where there was a floating start head current, flat water, and no wind on Saturday. On Sunday, the Varsity 8+ won by one second over Hamilton on the Erie Canal . The Varsity 8+ came in at 7:02 with Union finishing at 7:14 on Saturday. On Sunday, the Saints finished in 7:07.79 with Hamilton finishing in 7:08.79.
The Novice 8+ also won, in 22 seconds over Union , finishing in 7:34 . The Novice 4+ lost by six seconds to the Dutchwomen, coming in at 8:25 . Against Hamilton on Sunday, the Continentals won in the Novice 8 and the Novice 4. The Saints Novice 8 finished at 7:27.68, behind Hamilton ’s time of 7:16.76. The Novice 4 clocked in at 8:27.44 with Hamilton finishing in 8:11.79.
SAINT CREW TEAMS SWEEP RPI Apr. 9: St. Lawrence University’s Mens and Womens Crew opened the spring season with a complete sweep of R.P.I.
The race was held on the same course where the Liberty League Championships will be held on April 23. There was no wind, flat water, and a strong tail current.
The Varsity Women’s 8+ open the day with a 3 second victory. St. Lawrence took the lead off the start and maintained the lead throughout the race.
The Varsity Men’s 8+ defeated a strong boat from RPI by 2 seconds. These crews were close competitors all fall, but the Saints opened up a boat length lead by the 750m mark and maintained that lead the rest of the way. The Novice Men’s 8+ scored an impressive victory in their first sprint race with an 11 second win over RPI. Again, St. Lawrence took the lead early and systematically expanded upon that lead throughout the race.
The Novice Women’s 8+ and 4+ also took first; Both the 8+ and 4+ opened up a substantial leads by the 1000m mark and won comfortably. The 8+ won by 14 seconds and the 4+ by 16 seconds.
The rowing Saints return to action next weekend with a Saturday race v. Union at Union College Boathouse in Schenectady, NY and Sunday v. Hamilton at the Hamilton College Boathouse in Rome, NY.
TEN EARN LIBERTY LEAGUE ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS Ten Saints women named to Liberty League All-Academic Team. The team is selected by earning a cumulative 3.2 GPA.
They include Seniors: Monica Phillips who is double majoring in Environmental Science and Biology, and Fredyne Yust whose major is English; Juniors Emilie McRoberts-Math major and Denise Gonyo-History and English double major; and Sophomores Chelsea Isdell-English major, Paula Bogart-History major, Ryane Lokey-Spanish major, Vanessa Harvey-Fine Arts major, Elizabeth Pimentel-Government major and Caitlyn Carlson- Psychology major.
WOMEN'S EIGHT HAS STRONG RACE AT HEAD OF THE CHARLES Oct. 24: The Saints' varsity women continued to improve and had an excellent race this weekend in the Collegiate Women's' 8+ event at the Head of the Charles.
STRONG MORNING SHOWING FOR VARSITY 8: BOUY VIOLATIONS HAMPER FINAL PLACEMENT Oct 10 - The Saints' varsity women competed at the prestigious Stonehurst Invitation in Rochester, NY. This regatta features some of the finest crews in America, including Eastern Sprint schools Radcliff and Syracuse University and offers crews two races: a morning head piece and an afternoon sprint race.
SAINT BOATS OPEN SEASON WITH STRONG RACES AT MOHAWK AND ERIE
The Saint Novice 8 defeated Catholic University's Varsity A boat, Colgate's second Varsity 8 boat and Liberty League rival Hamilton's Novice 8 in one race at the Head of the Erie while the Varsity Women's 8+ was just 14 seconds off Colgate and 27 seconds behind Ithaca to take third in that event. The Saints also took third in the Varsity Women's 4+, finishing just two seconds off a strong boat from Hamilton.
In Saturday racing under windy and cloudy conditions at the Head of the Mohawk, the Saints swept the 8+ events. In the first race of their college career, the Novice women beat Cazenovia by 5:22 to capture the Mohawk Challenge Cup. The Varsity 8+ won the Aqueduct Cup with a 44 second win over Skidmore while the women's Varsity 4 was second, just six seconds behind Skidmore.
"It was a very good weekend of racing for our women's team," said head coach Nick Hughes. "I think we have established that we will be a force to be reckoned with in our league."
