SAINTS EXPERIENCE FINEST YEAR OF COMPETITION; PREPARE FOR 2007-08 Aug. 6: The men’s and women’s rowing teams at St. Lawrence closed out their eighth spring season of varsity competition. It was, in many ways, a new high watermark for the program. The addition of an assistant coach to the staff supported the growth of the rosters to nearly 60 rowers.
The increased squad size contributed to a breadth of boat speed for the Saints as all crews enjoyed success on the water, including multiple regular season victories, two Liberty League Rowing Championship titles, hosted by St. Lawrence, and two New York State Collegiate Rowing Championship medalists. At States, the Saints were fifth of nearly 30 participating colleges in the team points tally. St. Lawrence also sent four eights to the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta, the largest contingent in school history. There, the Novice Women’s Eight continued their extraordinary undefeated season by besting all crews in all heats of their event by nearly five seconds.
The achievements of the Saints Crew were not limited to the water, however. Perennially high academic achievement manifested itself once again. The crew teams’ average GPAs were again amongst the highest on campus. This past semester, twelve team members made the Dean’s List. The graduating class of seven included four magna cum laude honorees and two members of Phi Beta Kappa. One of the team's first-year women was recognized this past spring as one of the top 25 students in the Class of 2010. Additionally, the captain of the men’s team was the inaugural winner of the departmental Athletic Ambassador Award, in recognition of a commitment to furthering the mission of the athletic department and the welfare of the student-athlete through his leadership in the campus community.
Next year promises to be even brighter. Another assistant coach is being added to staff to bolster the training and instruction our student-athletes. The fourth new eight in four years will be added to the ever-growing fleet of racing shells in the fall, a sign of the significant support our program enjoys. The team will continue to enjoy the benefit of a first-rate boathouse situated on a picturesque and routinely calm portion of the St. Lawrence River, along with state-of-the-art strength and conditioning and athletic training facilities on campus. With only two rowers graduating from each Varsity Eight, a strong novice group elevating to varsity status and an incoming class that shows promise, it’s definitely an exciting time for the Saints Crew!
