WOMEN FALL, MEN SWIM PAST NAZARETH

Nov. 3: Junior Mike Trumbower and sophomores Matt Kirkpatrick and Robo Ibler led the St. Lawrence men’s swim team to their third win of the season Saturday as the Saints beat Nazareth 139-72 in Rochester, NY. The women, who faced a tough Golden Flyer squad, lost 93-129.

The Saints placed 1-2-3 in the 200-meter free, with junior Mike Trumbower leading the way for St. Lawrence. In his first race of the day, the Naples, NY native took out the 200 just ahead of his competition, but it was the back half of his race that pushed him ahead of the field, touching at 2:10.62. First year Jarred Pellerin and sophomore Brandon Barone finished second and third, respectively.

Trumbower’s second win would come in the 100-meter free, where he set the pace for the race, winning with a time of 58.45. First year Mike McPhillips came in second with a 1:00.14.

Ibler tallied his 4th win of the season in the 50-meter free, finishing in 25.26 while senior Steve Walano finished second in the race, more than half a second ahead of Nazareth’s Jon Campbell. His second win of the meet came in the 100-meter fly, where he took first with a time of 1:04.12. St. Lawrence sophomore Matt Kirkpatrick finished second.

Kirkpatrick also had a big meet for St. Lawrence. In addition to his second place finish in the fly, the Ridgefield, CT native took two first place finishes in the 200-meter IM, where he was nearly seven seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, and the 400-meter free, where he led another Saints 1-2 punch with senior captain Dave Burnham coming in second.

Burnham led the Saints in the longest race of the meet, finishing with a time of 9:54.26 in the 800, while junior Russ Hendrick touched second. Junior captain Matt Feldman recorded a win as he led another sweep for the Saints in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing first in a time of 1:08.80. Steve and Geoff Walano finished second and third, respectively.

Sophomore Stephen Dally took his first win of the season in the 100-meter breaststroke, finishing just ahead of Nazareth’s Michael Fritz. Dally came in at 1:14.72.

For the women, who are now 2-1, junior Ashley Bogosian and first year Hannah Grimes both recorded wins for St. Lawrence. Bogosian won the 50-meter free in what turned out to be the closest race of the day, where only one-tenth of a second determined the top three spots. The Massena, NY native sprinted to a 28.83 finish, only nine one-hundredths ahead of Nazareth’s Brittany Beane. Golden Flyer Meghan Okoniewski touched third with a 28.93. Bogosian also took first in the 100-meter free, almost a second ahead of Okoniewski, with a time of 1:03.88.

Grimes had a battle herself in the 100-meter breaststroke, taking it out slightly faster then Nazareth’s Kate Kukan, who chased the Hamden, CT native in the last 50 but was not able to catch her. Grimes finished with a 1:19.67, while Kukan was right behind, finishing right behind at 1:19.84.

Senior captain Kim Watcke and sophomores Kate Waters and Abbey Lynch also had impressive swims in the dual meet. Watcke finished second in both the 200-meter free and the 100-meter back, while Waters took second in 400 and 800-meter freestyle races. Lynch tallied a second place finish in the 100-meter fly.

The Saints return to action in the Frank and Lee Augsbury Pool next weekend against RIT and Rochester. The meet on Saturday against RIT will begin at 1:00pm.
