SAINTS GO 3-1 AT YALE TOURNAMENT
Jan. 21: St. Lawrence University’s men’s squash team had an eight-match win streak snapped in a 6-3 loss to Tufts, but completed a solid showing at the Yale tournament with a 3-1 record to improve to 9-2 on the season heading into the Maine Round Robin Jan. 25-27.
Sophomore Nick Pearson continued his personal unbeaten streak with four wins on the weekend to improve to 11-0 on the season and rookie Tyler Stout also went 4-0. Stout was selected as Liberty League Rookie of the Week. Senior number one player Dan McElvaine went 3-1 on the weekend and became the all-time career win leader for the Saints.
The Saints opened the weekend with a 9-0 win over Stanford with McElvaine, Alex Dodge, Scott Redpath, Pearson, Stout, Dan Shafer and Ben Ross all winning in three straight games in one through seven. Tom Whelan won 3-1 at eight, closing the match against Ananth Sridhar with a 9-3 win in game four and Nick Calandra came from one down to prevail 3-1 at nine, closing out the match with 9-6, 9-5 and 9-7 wins. Pete Montesano completed the Saint sweep with a 3-0 win in the exhibition slot at ten.
The Saints split Saturday matches, beating Connecticut College 9-0, but dropping the match to Tufts. The top six in the Saint lineup won in straight games while Ross and Whelan both went four at seven and eight. Ross lost game one to Kevin Coscarelle 9-3, but came back to win with 9-3, 9-2, and 9-0 games and Whelan dropped game won to Blay Bradley, but came back strong with 9-1, 9-1, and 9-3 wins. Colandra and Montesano completed another Saint sweep with 3-0 wins at nine and ten.
The middle of the Saint lineup provided the wins against Tufts as McElvaine lost 3-0 at one, Dodge went down 3-2 in a tough and highly competitive match at two and Redpath lost 3-1 at three. Pearson continued his win streak with a 3-0 win at four, Stout won 9-7, 9-6 and 9-4 over Nelson Schubert at five and Shafer was a 3-1 winnver, coming from one down to win 9-7, 9-4, 9-4 at six.
The Saints completed the weekend with a 6-3 win over Denison on Saturday. McElvaine won 3-0 at one and while Denison won at two and three, Pearson came through with a 3-1 win at four, Stout won 3-0 at five and Ross, Whelan and Calandra all won in three games at seven through nine for the match victory. Montesano won for the third time on the weekend at ten.
