CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS THURSDAY;
FIELD INCLUDES 19 RETURNING CHAMPS

May 20: Two teams will be out to defend national titles won a year ago and both will be looking for a second straight sweep of indoor and outdoor championships when the 2003 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships get underway at St. Lawrence University's Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex on Thursday.

The University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, which won both the indoor and outdoor titles last year and this season's indoor championship will be after its third straight men's championship and to add to its record seven outdoor team titles while Wheaton College will also be out to make it three straight titles and complete a second straight sweep of the indoor and outdoor championships in the women's competition.

The meet will bring nearly 700 athletes plus coaches, support personnel and fans to Canton with competition starting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. A pre-meet banquet for athletes and coaches will be held at the Newell Field House on Wednesday night to officially open the championship.

The field for the meet, which is posted on Raceberryjam, includes seven men's individual event defending champions and a dozen women who won individual event titles a year ago.

The men's field includes Wheaton sophomore Dan Olsen, who won the high jump last year and has a season's best height of 7-1 this year, Matt Groose of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, who has the best time this season in the 800 and Derek Toshner of Wisconsin-Lacrosse who has the best seed time in the 400 hurdles. Mike Turgeon of Wisconsin-Lacrosse is the defending champion in the discus and has the best throw this season by 2.75 meters.

Mark Miller of Keene State, the 2002 champion in the 1500, is in the field but not in that event. Miller has the season's best time in the 3000 steeplechase and is also qualified in the 5000 meters.

Mary Proulx of Keene State, who won the distance double last year with championships in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters is qualified again this season in both races and has the top qualifying time in the 10,000 by 1:20. She will get competition in the 5,000 from 2002 1500 meter champion Missy Buttry of Wartburg, who has the best time at that distance by 5 seconds and the best time this year in the 5000 by nearly 40 seconds.

Amber James of Wheaton is back to defender her titles in the 200 and 400 meters and has the best qualifying time in the 400 while Liz Woodworth of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is the defending 800 meter champion and also has the best seed time in that event.

Other returning champions in running events include Muffy Israel of Carthage in the 100 meters and Paulette Baldwin of Lehman in the 100 hurdles, who has the top seed time this year in that event.

In field events, Christina Sherwin of Moravian is in the field to defend her javelin championship and has a qualifying throw of 177-0 which is 27 feet better than any other competitor. Tessa Donoghue of Wheaton will try to defend her title in the long jump while 2002 champions Beth Grzybowski of John Carroll and Darcell Edwards of McMurray will try to repeat in the high jump and triple jump respectively.

Competition will begin with the men's discus at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Thursday finals include the men's and women's discus, women's pole vault and long jump and men's high jump in addition to the men's and women's 10,000 meters. Trials will be conducted in a number of other events and competition will also start in the multi-event championships, the decathlon for the men and heptathlon for the women.

Friday's competition will begin with the women's hammer, women's javelin and men's pole vault at 10:30 a.m. Other Friday finals include the men's hammer and long jump, women's triple jump and the men's and women's steeplechase.

Saturday competition will start with the men's javelin at 11 a.m. and include the finals in the men's and women's shot, men's triple jump, women's high jump and the championship races in the 4x100 relays, 1500 meters, men's 110 and women's 100 high hurdles, 400 meters, 100 meters, 800 meters, 400 hurdles, 200 meters and 5000 meters. The meet will conclude with the finals in the men's and women's 4x400 relays.
