THREE
EVENTS, THREE NCAA RECORDS START DAY TWO OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The rewrite of the facility record book
at St. Lawrence University's Merrick-Pinkard Track and
Field complex continued on day two of the NCAA Division
III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track Championships, and
NCAA Division III records fell in the first three events
of the day Thursday.
"We expected a number of records to fall
for the facility," said St. Lawrence coach and meet
director Mike Howard. "But it was going to take the
kind of performances we have been seeing to do it. Many
of our facility records have been set by potential Canadian
Olympians who compete for the Ottawa Lions Track Club"
A total of six NCAA Division III meet
records have been set in the first two days of competition
and facility records have fallen in nearly every event
but the dashes.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh sophomore Deena Heins
set the day's first record, shattering the facility
mark and the NCAA Division III Championship record in
the women's hammer, and she did it twice. Heins threw
57.28 meters (187-11) to better the previous meet record
by six inches in the trials and then threw 57.43 meters
(188-5) to break her own record in the finals.
Moravian junior Christina Scherwin set
a facility, Division III championship record and all-time
Division III record in the javelin. Scherwin threw 55.34
meters (181-6) in the trials, 3.40 meters farther than
the 19-year old record in the event which was held by
Jodi Smiley of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
The third NCAA meet record to topple was
in the pole vault as Wisconsin-LaCrosse sophomore Hans
Schmidt cleared 5.35 meters (17-6.5). Schmidt just missed
in an attempt to match the all-time Division III record
of 5.55 meters (18-2.5). A fourth meet record fell in
the women's 3000 meter steeplechase as Williams College
sophomore Jenn Campbell, the top qualifier in the event,
ran 10:33.67, clipping nearly ten seconds off the previous
meet record. The fifth record to fall on Friday belonged
to defending women's triple jump champion Darcell Edwards,
a junior from McMurray, who defended her title with
a jump of 12.82 meters (42-0.75) which is both a NCAA
Division III meet record and Division III all-time record.
The facility record also fell in the 110
hurdles competition held as part of the decathlon. John
Zweiger of Wisconsin-LaCrosse won that race in 14.95
seconds, trimming .06 off the previous best. The high
hurdle record went to 14.58 in the trials for Saturday's
110 meter hurdle finals as Derek Toschner of Wisconsin-LaCrosse
led the field of those advancing. Megan Wiseman of Lynchburg
set a facility record in the 800 meters as part of the
heptathlon, winning that event in 2:13.99. That record
was later improved to 2:10.39 by Megan Daymont of St.
Olaf in the first of three trials in the 800 meter championship.
The men's 800 track record also fell in the trials for
that event as defending champion Matt Groose of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
advanced to Saturday's final with a clocking of 1:48.83.
Peter Wagner, a senior from Central (IA),
last year's second place finisher in the decathlon is
the 2003 champion, overtaking Kevin Deering of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
during the final five events to win with a total of
6825 points.
Calvin College senior Annie Vanderlaan
is the 2003 heptathlon champion, posting a total of
4852 points in the seven-event competition. Vanderlaan
won the 100 hurdles and 200 dash and scored over 800
points in both of those events plus the 800 meters in
which she was sixth. Vanderlaan won by 49 points over
second-place finisher Raegan Schultz of Central College
of Iowa and automatically set a facility record in the
event as it was the first time St. Lawrence has hosted
a outdoor multi-event competition.
Freshman Dion Ballentine of Carthage College
set a facility record and turned in the best jump of
the season in winning the long jump with a 7.38 meter
(24-2.5) jump. Ballentine improved his qualifying distance
by over a foot in winning the event. Senior Noah Eschenbach
of Wisconsin-Stevens Point also established a facility
record in winning the hammer throw with a 58.27 (191-2)
throw.
Justin Easter, a senior from Bates College,
successfully defended his championship in the 3000 meter
steeplechase, winning the event in a track record 8:54.27
which was also the best time run this season in Division
III competition.
