The sociology department was amazingly impactful during my time at St. Lawrence. The faculty were always open and supportive, and were always comforting when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after graduation. My most valuable experiences took place in my sociology classes, and the outside opportunities that went along with them. I took 3 different CBLs and an internship my senior year, all of which are still on my resume and are often my talking points during job interviews. All of this is due to the atmosphere created by the sociology department. After graduating in 2014, I chose to join Servant Year, a yearlong program that places young people at non-profits in the community where they volunteer full time. I work at the Seamen’s Church Institute of Philadelphia and South Jersey, running all of the organization’s communications. My sociology classes taught me how to think from many different points of view and that’s a skill I use every day in my current job. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my experiences in the sociology department at St. Lawrence.
