Athletics
The University offers 32 intercollegiate athletic teams for men and women.
The
University’s philosophy of athletics includes shared understanding that
intercollegiate
athletics supports the institution’s learning goals for its students.
Most teams compete
on the NCAA Division III level; men’s and women’s ice hockey are
in Division I
and equestrian is non-divisional. In addition to being multi-divisional in
the NCAA,
St. Lawrence is a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the
Liberty
League. The intercollegiate athletic program is always competitive regionally,
and
teams often challenge for conference titles, regional recognition and national
ranking.
For those who do not wish to compete on the varsity level, the University also
offers
an array of club and intramural teams. That St. Lawrence has been coeducational
since
its founding in 1856 has always presented a strong message to students that
we
provide equal athletic opportunities for men and women. We also encourage studentathletes
to participate in more than one sport. Admissions profiles show that 85
percent of the students have participated in high school sports. The extensive
menu
of varsity teams, clubs and intramural sports which is available to all students
reflects
both traditional and changing needs for recreation and athletics along with
regional
opportunities which complement the North Country environment.
The phrase “teaching coach,” committed to the students’ complete
development, best
describes the department’s philosophy. The coaches’ mission is
to provide the studentathlete
with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence
individually or as part of a team. The athletic experience at St. Lawrence
is designed
to meet students’ needs for competition, fitness and fun while maintaining
a strong
academic profile.
Indoor athletic facilities include two field houses, each
with artificial turf infield, track
and tennis courts; two regulation basketball courts; competition swimming
and diving
pool; squash center; 133-station fitness center; climbing wall; ice arena;
and equestrian
arena. Outdoor facilities include competition and practice fields for soccer,
softball, baseball, football, lacrosse and field hockey along with a lighted
artificial turf
field; six lighted tennis courts; lighted all-weather nine-lane track and
lighted football/
track stadium; and 18-hole championship golf course. Recreation facilities
include
jogging/walking trail, cross country/mountain bike trails, intramural fields,
and outdoor
basketball and volleyball courts.
