Location
St. Lawrence considers its location one of its greatest assets. Canton, New
York, is a county seat and regional business center with a population of
6,400 in the St. Lawrence River Valley. In the heart of New York State’s
North Country, the region is characterized by several small cities, numerous
farms, many villages and four colleges within 10 miles; clean air and open
landscapes; and friendly, self-sufficient, perseverant people. Canton sits
between the Adirondack Mountains, the largest state park in the United States,
and the site of the University’s nationally recognized Adirondack Semester,
and the Canadian-U.S. border that is the St. Lawrence River. The University
is the American liberal arts college closest to the capital of a foreign
nation, and the Canadian studies program takes full
advantage of proximity for international and intercultural programming. Proudly
asserting to prospective and current students that “St. Lawrence’s
location will shape who you are and who you will be,” St. Lawrence would
not be St. Lawrence if it were located anywhere else in the nation.
The Canton
Initiative
The Canton Initiative, launched in 1997, provides co-investment funds for economic
development and residential projects. The University Board of Trustees has
dedicated $2 million in co-investment funds and seed monies to further these
goals:
To invest in and stimulate others to invest in properties within
a defined enterprise zone so as to improve the physical attractiveness of the
zone and promote its economic enhancement.
To increase directly the tax base
of the Village and Town of Canton through investment, development, and/or divestiture
of tax-exempt University property.
To
establish and maintain a partnership spirit between the University and the
Canton community as we pursue projects of mutual advantage together.
Numerous
businesses, both retail and restaurant, and several residential projects have
resulted from Canton Initiative support.
