At Convocation on August 26, Associate Professor of History and Director of Academic Advising Elizabeth A. Regosin received the Louis and Frances Maslow Award; L.M. Flint Professor of Fine Arts Elizabeth L. Kahn was given the J. Calvin Keene Award posthumously; and Earl H. Froats, facilities operations manager, received the John P. Taylor Award. Faculty entered on continuing tenure were Associate Professor of English Robert D. Cowser, Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Ilia Casanova-Marengo, Associate Professor of Government Karl K. Schonberg and Associate Professor of Biology Joseph S. Erlichman. Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Duncan J. Melville's promotion to full professor was also recognized at Convocation.

Gifts and grants to St. Lawrence University totaled $16.6 million in fiscal year 2003-2004 (ending June 30, 2004), from private and public sources. The University's annual giving program, the St. Lawrence Fund, grew markedly in both the total amount raised and participation. Additionally, the University has raised $25.6 million to date from private and state grants for Phase One of its science facilities project. Coupled with a $10 million bond issue designated for this purpose by the University, $35.6 million in resources has been secured for this project, toward the required total of $44.1 million ($35.6 million for construction and $8.5 million in endowment funds St. Lawrence is requiring to ensure funding for the future use of the facility). The University hopes to raise the additional $8.5 million required before the spring of 2005 in order to begin construction at that time.

Associate Professor of English Natalia Rachel Singer is the author of a new book, Scraping By in the Big Eighties (University of Nebraska Press), which combines memoir with political commentary to make the point that “history is being revisited upon us” in a trickle-down phenomenon she dubs “déjà-voodoo.” The book is part of the American Lives series, edited by Tobias Wolff, and featuring books of literary nonfiction. Singer will sign copies of her book at Brewer Bookstore on Saturday, September 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., and is scheduled to appear on North Country Public Radio's “Readers and Writers on the Air” on September 9.

Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Ilia Casanova-Marengo’s article “Los símbolos de la abuela que son también los deseos del corazón: en torno a ‘Más espacio’” was published in the Spring 2004 issue of Diálogo, the magazine of the Center for Latino Research at DePaul University. The article focuses on the representation of the grandmother character in Judith Ortiz Cofer’s essay “More Space” from her book Silent Dancing: A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood.

Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Melissa Schulenberg won the Purchase Award for work in the North Country Regional Juried Art Show, presented during the summer of 2004 at the Gibson Gallery at SUNY Potsdam. The Purchase Award is the top award in the exhibition. Schulenberg's award-winning woodcut, Drift, will be submitted to the Gibson Gallery Collections Committee for acceptance into its Permanent Collection.

Augustus (Gus) diZerega, visiting assistant professor of government, has been awarded a $10,000 prize from the Fund for the Study of Spontaneous Orders at the Atlas Economic Research Foundation, for his research into “the spontaneous creation of democratic political orders.” An article by diZerega and related to this research, titled “Toward a Hayekian Theory of Commodification and Systemic Contradiction: Citizens, Consumers and the Media,” appears in the Summer 2004 issue of The Review of Politics.

SLU Buddies, a cooperative mentoring program that matches University students one-on-one with local elementary and middle-school students who need extra help academically, socially and/or spiritually, has been recognized in a manual citing “ideas for good practice” published by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission for Student Involvement. The program is coordinated by Anne S. Townsend, project director of St. Lawrence's David Garner Center for Collegiate Volunteerism.
