Announcements
John Irving Tickets: Tickets to the Evening with John Irving, Saturday, October
9, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel, are available to the campus community.
Tickets are free, but are required for entrance to the event, which is co-presented
by the University Writers Series and Laurentian Leadership Weekend. Tickets
must be requested in person at the Student Center Information Desk or at Brewer
Bookstore; they will not be mailed.
Compliance with FTC Law: The following is adapted from a memo from Kathryn
Mullaney, vice president for finance: Two years ago, the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) published Safeguard Rules that require financial institutions to develop
a written plan that describes how the institution protects its customers’ private
financial information. Colleges and universities are included as financial
institutions. (Such financial information we collect includes student payroll
data, credit card numbers given in payment of bills or for gifts to the University,
family income as reported for financial aid and more.) In response, the University
asked several people who work directly with financial information to develop
St. Lawrence’s information security program. Their recommended plan
was approved by President Sullivan and is now posted on the University’s
Web site under Faculty and Staff/Resources/Policies (http://www.stlawu.edu/policies/info_security.html).
In the next few weeks, members of the planning committee will set up meetings
with department directors whose functions require employee access to financial
information. The directors will then be responsible for implementing the
safeguards outlined in the plan for their department. Some current employees
will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement (which will then be
filed with HR), and all new administrative and hourly employees will be required
to do so.
Honorary Degree Nominations: The University seeks nominations for honorary
degrees. As stated in a recent memo from President Daniel F. Sullivan, “Honorary
degrees awarded by St. Lawrence University signify recognition of exemplary
accomplishment consistent with the traditions and values of this liberal
arts learning community. Recipients serve as models for our students as they
respond to the question posed by the distinguished Laurentian Owen D. Young: ‘Have
you enlarged your knowledge of obligations and your capacity to perform them?’
The University should consider the following criteria in the selection
of honorary degree candidates:
1. Recognized achievement in scholarship, the arts, business or professional
life;
2. Distinguished humanitarian, altruistic or philanthropic service;
3. Distinctive contributions to a regional, national or global community;
4. Abiding interest in a relationship with St. Lawrence University that
furthers the goals and mission of the University.
Because St. Lawrence has programs to honor those formally affiliated with
the University, barring exceptional circumstances, current employees and
trustees will not be considered for an honorary degree. Further, honorary
degrees normally will not be awarded to individuals whose political position,
financial resources or celebrity alone bring them to our attention.” Letters
of nomination, with supporting documentation, should be submitted to the
president’s office by Wednesday, December 1. For information: Lisa
Cania, lcania@stlawu.edu or 5585.
Travel/Study Awards Available: The Asian Studies Initiative, funded by a four-year grant from the Freeman Foundation, is entering its third year. Workshops will be held on Wednesday mornings, 9-9:45 a.m. at the Center for Teaching and Learning, 62 Park Street, unless indicated otherwise.
Alcohol-Free Mini-Grant Fund: In its ongoing effort to reduce alcohol use, especially high-risk alcohol use, on the St. Lawrence University campus, the St. Lawrence University Wellness Initiative sponsors the St. Lawrence University Alcohol-Free Event Fund and the Campus-Community Alcohol-Free Event Fund. These funds can be accessed through a “mini-grant” process. Both funds are available to any St. Lawrence University student, student group, faculty member or staff member. Grants will be awarded in amounts ranging up to $300 per event; requests must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the proposed event. For information and to obtain an application packet: Bill Burns, wburns@stlawu.edu or 5391.
