Directory Assistance Options: As of July 1, the option to call external operators for directory information was discontinued from the campus telephone system. Trustee Nominations Welcomed: The Board of Trustees will be electing a new McCurdy/Sprague trustee in the upcoming academic year, to begin service July 1, 2005. Nominations of eligible alumni within the classes of 1995-2003, inclusive, may be sent to Valerie Ingram, vingram@stlawu.edu, by September 15, 2004, with a brief explanation addressing how they meet the following criteria:
• Undergraduate success – Academic record/campus perception, evidence of ability to think broadly and strategically, and record of leadership.
• Professional promise – As evidenced by early direction and accomplishment.
• Interpersonal skills – As related to potential effectiveness as a trustee colleague, relying upon references from respected staff, faculty and peers.

Faculty/Staff Mailroom Change: The faculty/staff mailroom is now located on the ground floor of Vilas Hall.

Music Ensembles Seek Members: The following University music ensembles are open to all; for rehearsal and other information contact director Barry Torres, 229-5171 or btorres@stlawu.edu: University Chorus; Early Music Ensemble (comprised of the Early Music Players and the Early Music Singers); Special Productions Ensemble, this semester focusing on the music of 20th-century American composer Charles Ives; and the String Ensemble.

Student Workers Needed: The University communications department is looking for student workers to help with Laurentian Leadership Weekend activities, Oct. 8-10. Those students approved to drive University vehicles are especially needed to drive in the Canton area as well as to the Ogdensburg, Ottawa and Syracuse airports. Achievements
Assistant Professor of Chemistry Ning Gao has been awarded a grant of $92,900 by the Lake Champlain Research Consortium to fund a study by her and other scientists of mercury contamination in Lake Champlain. The project, entitled "Enhancements to the Lake Champlain Mercury Mass Balance: A Multidisciplinary Approach," will be headed by Gao, with collaborators from Dartmouth College, Clarkson University, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, the University of Vermont and the U.S. Geological Survey.
Gao is also principal investigator for the project "St. Lawrence University Acquisition of Instrumentation for Monitoring Climate, Atmospheric and Aquatic Environmental Processes in Northern New York,” which has been awarded a grant of $194,476 by the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation Program to support the purchase of weather station equipment; ambient air and aquatic monitoring equipment; and analytical instruments for the University's Integrated Science Education Initiative (ISEI). Additional faculty who are expected to direct undergraduate research activities in the program are Associate Professor of Biology Bradley S. Baldwin, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies Carolyn E. Johns, Grace Fippinger Assistant Professor of Biology Erika L. Barthelmess and Assistant Professor of Geology Stephen D. Robinson.

The news programming of North Country Public Radio, based on campus, has been recognized with several awards from Public Radio News Directors Inc. NCPR received four awards for reporting during its morning newsmagazine, “The 8 O’Clock Hour.” St. Lawrence Valley reporter David Sommerstein won a first-place award for continuing coverage of agriculture in the region, and a first-place award for a feature story on rutabaga bowling at a farmers’ market. Adirondack Bureau Chief Brian Mann won a first-place award for a series on snowmobile safety, and a second-place award for continuing coverage of Pakistani refugees at the Canadian border.
