Announcements

Distinguished Pianist Inaugurates Birdsong Endowment for Music: Randall Atcheson will perform in concert on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Gulick Theatre, in the inaugural performance sponsored by the Birdsong Endowment for Music. The only student in the history of the Juilliard School of Music ever allowed to pursue and receive simultaneous degrees in piano and organ performance, Atcheson won the Juilliard organ competition and gave the premiere performance on the new pipe organ at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. He has recorded 10 albums, featuring both classical music and his unique arrangements of sacred music. Atcheson made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1991.
The Birdsong Endowment for Music was established in 1999 through the generosity of Lynn ’68 and Terry Burns ’69 Birdsong, of Greenwich, Conn., to bring visiting musicians or musical groups to campus to enhance music education.

Nobel Prize-Winner to Visit Campus: Wole Soyinka, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, will be on the St. Lawrence campus to offer a lecture on Wednesday, April 26, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre and a reading from his works on Thursday, April 27, at 8 p.m. in Sykes Common Room. A playwright, poet, novelist and critic, Soyinka has published over 40 works; he is Robert W. Woodruff Professor of the Arts at Emory University. His visit is part of both the "African Arts: Into the Next Millennium" lecture series and the Writers Series.

Student Research Alters University's Paper Purchases: Paper used in copying machines on campus is now more environmentally friendly, thanks in part to research and recommendations from students in Professor of Environmental Studies Alan Schwartz's spring seminar, which examined how the campus could be "greener" in its practices. They researched options for environmentally sound (high post-consumer recycled content; process-chlorine-free; manufactured regionally) copy paper and made recommendations for its purchase.
Contacted by the students, the manufacturer -- Graphic Paper New York -- agreed to split a truckload shipment (half with the paper the University had been using and half with the recommended paper, Roland New Life DP 100), bringing the cost down and allowing the University to move toward making the campus more environmentally sound.
Students in the seminar are Brian Banton '00, Victoria Engel '01, Melissa Henrichon '01 and Michael Newton '01. They and Professor Schwartz expressed appreciation to University administrators for their support.

University Fellows 2000 Chosen: Dean Thomas Coburn has announced the names of the 17 students who have been selected University Fellows for Summer 2000. These students will receive funding to conduct research with a faculty partner in a program that was piloted successfully in Summer 1999. The students, with their project titles and faculty partners’ names, are listed below.

Note: Ness and MacKay University Fellows are supported by endowments created by

St. Lawrence alumnae Lorna Ness ’75 and Katy MacKay ’70.

Student Selected For Japan Program: Nathan F. Hall ’00, of Montpelier, Vermont, will spend next year teaching in Japan, having been selected to be part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. Initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Home Affairs in cooperation with local governments in Japan, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program is designed to invite foreign youth to Japan and provide them with opportunities to teach language and sports at junior and senior high schools all over the Japan, or to engage in international exchange activities at local governments. The program began in 1987 with approximately 850 young people from the U.S., U.K., Australia and New Zealand; since then, the numbers of countries and participants have increased. In 1999, approximately 5,800 people participated in the program from 37 countries.

O'Dell Wins Fulbright: Brendan T. O'Dell ’00, of Beaverton, Oregon, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to study in Germany next year. O’Dell is a mathematics and German major. He will spend the year at the University of Leipzig in Germany, taking graduate-level courses in mathematics, in preparation for earning his master's degree.

Connett Wins Leadership Award: Professor of Chemistry Paul H. Connett received the Environmental Protector Leadership Award from Beyond Pesticides/National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides (NCAMP) at their annual conference, held recently in

New York City. Others cited by the organization for their efforts were environmentalists Barry Commoner and Lois Gibbs. The award states that it was given to Connett "for encouraging clear scientific thinking and inciting environmental activism."

Hornung Is Piskor Lecturer: Dana Professor of Biology David E. Hornung has been named the Frank P. Piskor Faculty Lecturer for 2001. Next spring, Hornung will deliver a campus lecture on the topic "How the Nose Knows: The Relationship between Human Nasal Anatomy and Olfactory Ability." For the Piskor Lecture, Hornung plans to conduct further research on the relationship between nasal anatomy and olfactory ability, which has not heretofore been formally tested.

Commencement Preview: The Commencement Committee is down to final details as Commencement looms large, a little over three weeks from now. Ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday, May 21, at 10 a.m. on the Owen D. Young Library Quadrangle, or Appleton Arena, if the weather is poor.

St. Lawrence will award honorary degrees to the Alexander String Quartet, recognizing the ensemble's long-term relationship with the University; Native American actress Tantoo Cardinal, who has been a guest lecturer on campus on several occasions; and Tracey McNamara ’76, a pathologist at the Bronx Zoo and the scientist who helped identify the West Nile virus in New York City last fall.

Faculty and staff who plan to march in the academic procession are asked to arrive in front of Carnegie Hall or in Appleton Arena by 9 a.m. A post-Commencement light luncheon will be served either at the Herring-Cole Grove (if Commencement is outdoors) or in Leithead Field House (if Commencement moves inside). Academic department signs will be erected so faculty, students and families can connect more easily after the ceremonies.

The full schedule of Commencement events will be prepared and distributed in early May.
