Announcements
Two Alumni Elected Trustees: Priceline.com President and CEO Jeffery H. Boyd ’78,
of Greenwich, Conn., and James B. Brush ’77, president, CEO and owner
of the Sentry Group, a manufacturer and marketer of fire-resistant safes, files
and cabinetry in Rochester, N.Y., have each been elected to six-year terms
on the Board of Trustees.
Commencement Honorees: Three distinguished alumni will be awarded honorary
degrees by their alma mater at Commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 16, beginning
at 10 a.m. on the Creasy Commencement Commons (Appleton Arena in case of heavy
rain). Honorary degrees will be awarded to Karen Hitchcock ’64, president
of SUNY Albany; Mark Klett ’74, internationally known photographer and
college professor; and Lorrie Moore ’78, novelist and college professor.
Commencement Volunteers Sought: Commencement organizers are in need of several faculty and staff to assist in various roles at the ceremonies on Sunday, May 16. Some roles also require availability for approximately two hours for rehearsal during the week before. Those interested should e-mail Lisa Cania, lcania@stlawu.edu.
Burt Symposium: The second annual Ellen C. ODK Applications: Sophomores, juniors and seniors in the top third of their class are invited to apply for membership in Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), the national leadership honor society recognizing leadership, exemplary character and citizenship. Workshop on Reporting Child Abuse: A workshop on identifying and reporting child abuse and maltreatment will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 4-6:45 p.m. in Atwood 106. The program fulfills the training requirements established for nurses, physicians, teachers, school administrators, school counselors and other licensed or certified professionals. Information concerning physical and behavioral indicators of child abuse and maltreatment, the statutory reporting requirements of the New York State Social Service Law, and treatment and prevention topics will be covered. Smoking Cessation Program: A free one-hour smoking cessation information session will be offered in Noble Center 222 on Wednesday, March 24, at noon. For information: 5596.

An academic journal has published an article co-authored by a St. Lawrence faculty member with University students and students in Kenya. Nyame Akuma: Bulletin of the Society of Africanist Archaeologists includes in issue #60, December 2003, the article “Recent archaeological research in the Lake Magadi Basin, Southern Kenya,” by Associate Professor of Anthropology John Barthelme and co-authors, including Robert DeLong ’03, Tristan Slater ’04, Rebecca Chartier ’03 and three students from Kenya. The paper discusses recent archaeological research in the southern Rift Valley of Kenya; students assisted Barthelme in fieldwork as well as analysis, map-making and writing.

An article by John B. Linsley ’04, about market day in Kenya, has been
published in the Spring 2004 issue of Abroad View Magazine. Linsley, of Topsfield,
Mass., participated in St. Lawrence's program in Kenya in 2002. He was awarded
a Travel Research Grant to complete an eco-tourism travel-study in Jinja,
Uganda, over winter break in 2002. Linsley has also been invited to present
some of his research at the 8th Annual African Language Teachers Association
Conference.
