Student Center Grand Opening: Come to the Grand Opening
of the Student Center, Saturday, February 21. The schedule includes:
12:00 p.m. - Grand Opening Ceremony (main entrance)
12:30 p.m. - LaSalle Swamp Monsters (Alumni Council Campus Room)
12:30 p.m. - Guided tours begin at the information desk
1:30 p.m. - Gospel Choir (Laurentian Room)
2:15 p.m. - Singing Saints (Laurentian Room)
9:00 p.m. - Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (Laurentian Room)
All performances are by groups made up primarily or entirely of St. Lawrence
students. Celebration cake and other refreshments will be available throughout
the building in the early afternoon. Several of the alumni and parent donors
to the building will attend to enjoy the space and meet students, faculty
and staff.
Candidate for Promotion: Duncan Melville, associate professor of mathematics,
is being considered for promotion to professor by the Professional Standards
Committee. Letters from faculty and staff familiar with the work of Prof.
Melville are vital in the review process. Especially helpful are letters that
speak to the quality of his teaching, scholarship and service. For a complete
description of the criteria for promotion in rank, please consult Section
III E (pages 65-66) of the Faculty Handbook of St. Lawrence University
on the Academic Affairs Web page of the St. Lawrence University Web site:

Dean Grant H. Cornwell, Vilas 103, by February 23, 2004. Prof. Melville's
curriculum vitae is available at the ODY reserve desk and in the dean's office
in Vilas Hall. Letters are used solely for the promotion process; confidentiality
will be protected to the extent possible under the law.
Professional Semester Applications: Applications for the fall 2004 Professional Semester (student teaching) are due by March 1, 2004, and must be accompanied by an up-to-date transcript and letter of recommendation from a field supervisor. Application forms may be picked up in the education department office in Atwood Hall. Seniors interested in student teaching in the fall as graduate students in the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program must also apply. Only students seeking certification in math, science(s), English and social studies should apply for the fall Professional Semester. For information: Esther Oey, eoey@stlawu.edu or 5872.
Senior Awards: Nominations are being accepted for the Douglas M. Brown Senior Award, given by the Alumni Executive Council to a senior woman and man in recognition of a well-rounded academic and co-curricular experience at St. Lawrence. The award is presented at Moving-Up Day. Nomination letters should be sent to Lisa Cania, lcania@stlawu.edu, Vilas 212, by Friday, March 12.
Outdoor Program: Introduction to Kayaking/Roll clinics are being offered in the Augsbury pool on several Sundays at 4:45 p.m. Introduction to Telemark Skiing clinics take place on Whiteface Mountain on several weekends. Lunch Bunch: Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the Eben Holden Conference Room (note new location).
