ANNOUNCEMENTS

Meningitis Vaccine Recall: Aventis, the manufacturer of meningitis vaccines, has issued a voluntary recall on certain lots of its meningitis vaccine. There are four separate serogroups in the vaccine and only one, Serogroup A, was found not to provide long-lasting protection against a form of the disease that does not occur in the United States, but is found in parts of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan. In addition, serogroup A epidemics have occurred in Burundi, Rwanda, and the United Republic of Tanzania. Outbreaks have also occurred in association with the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. If students received a vaccine from the recalled lots, they have no problem unless they travel to the areas listed above. About 20 St. Lawrence students received an immunization from this affected serogroup lot and each of these students received notice in person this week. One student thus far has required revaccination. Other campus offices, and the medical director in Kenya, also were notified. For questions, contact Director of Student Health Services Patty Todd, 5392.

University Receives Grant: St. Lawrence has been awarded a grant from the Verizon Foundation, through the Independent College Fund of New York, Inc., to work with students in Canton and Lisbon high schools to improve literacy through theatre and technology. With assistance from the grant, for $12,000, participants will develop a program that teams University undergraduates with high school students identified as having deficiencies in reading, writing and speaking skills, in a collaborative effort to find creative solutions to literacy problems through theatre and technology. Students in St. Lawrence's education department will be involved in the program, with assistance from the Liberty Partnership Program of the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley. In support of the project, St. Lawrence will provide approximately $10,700 in institutional resources as cost sharing. Project coordinator is adjunct instructor of religious studies and speech and theatre Victoria Rue.

Alumni of the University are not eligible. Confidential nominations, which should include a name, address, telephone number and brief profile of the nominee, may be forwarded to Lisa Cania, University communications, 5585 or lcania@stlawu.edu.
