ANNOUNCEMENTS

Energy Conservation Program: According to an announcement from facilities operations, the University is entering into an energy conservation program similar to the one that was in place in the 1970s. The program consists of a two-stage process. The first stage will consist of removing light bulbs that have already been identified as providing excess illumination. The second stage will involve a formal campus-wide energy audit that will identify areas where more efficient light sources need to be installed, as well as additional areas of excess lighting. As in past audits, industry standards will be adhered to, and illumination levels will match or exceed the requirements based on the usage needs for a given space. The audit will be conducted by the LKPB Engineering Group, St. Paul, MN, beginning sometime this month. Facilities operations asks that people turn off all lights and computers when they are not being used, as a significant cost-saving measure. For information: 5601.

ISEP Meeting: An information meeting about the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) is scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, at 4:15 p.m. in Carnegie107.

Achievements

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Jeffery A. Greathouse has received a Cottrell College Science Award from the Research Corporation, a foundation for the advancement of science based in Tucson, Arizona. Greathouse will use the award to perform computer simulations of uranium interactions with clay minerals, over the next two summers, with the assistance of St. Lawrence students. President Daniel F. Sullivan said, "This award is highly competitive. Professor Greathouse's research - especially that it will involve our students in collaboration - is an example of how top liberal arts colleges do science education well."

Assistant Professor of Gender Studies Joel Morton recently gave a public lecture and spoke to a history class at Aurora University in Illinois on the topic, "Gender Relations in Postsocialist Europe." At the recent conference of the Eastern German Studies Association at the University of Montreal, Morton gave a talk titled "Bending Gender Studies to the East: A Post-Socialist Hybrid?" Morton has conducted research during the past two summers in East Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland; this year, he spent two months interviewing faculty in newly established gender studies departments and programs, as well as staff workers at women's centers and gender-focused non-governmental organizations.

Associate Professor of Physics Aileen O'Donoghue wrote a scripture reflection that has been published in the most recent edition of the quarterly Living Faith: Daily Catholic Devotions. The publication "provides daily spiritual reflections from...the laity, priests and religious women, (to) provide a variety of perspectives and insights. Each daily devotion is a personal reflection on a Scripture passage from the day's Mass readings, a format that encourages readers to pray and meditate in spirit with the seasons of the Church year."

Pedro Tejada '03 presented his summer research from his participation in the McNair Program at the national McNair conference at the University of Wisconsin at Madison on Saturday, November 2. Tejada researched "Random Walks and Quantum Walks on Graphs" through Clarkson University's McNair Program. Tejada is the first Hispanic student to be an honors candidate in mathematics at St. Lawrence. He graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, has served as a HEOP summer mentor for three years, has tutored during the academic year on campus, and is currently tutoring calculus at Clarkson as well.

The men's soccer team won the UCAA regular-season championship and with it home field in the league tournament with a 3-2 overtime win over Union College on October 26. The Saints, who moved up to ninth in the NCAA Division III national rankings, will be the host institution for the tournament, which begins November 9.

From the properties of blowing bubbles to the chemistry of copper, Canton fifth-graders recently got lessons from members of the Chemistry Club, in recognition of National Chemistry Week. The club members put on demonstrations of what chemistry is, especially that it can be fun. This was the second year that the club has participated in the program, as part of National Chemistry Week.
