Announcements
Announcement from Security and Safety: On October 22, 2003, Patrick
Gagnon, interim director of security and safety, issued the following statement:
"On Monday night, October 20, four golf carts were taken from the Facilities
Operations area and extensively damaged. In the process of the incident, campus
property near the Wachtmeister Field Station was damaged. We have begun an
investigation of these incidents and welcome any information that would assist
in the identification of those responsible. Please contact me at 5555 or e-mail
pgagnon@stlawu.edu if you can assist this investigation. Thank you."
Professor Emeritus Mallam Passes Away: A memorial service for Professor Emeritus
of History William D. Mallam will take place on Saturday, November 8, at 4
p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. Professor Mallam died October 15 at the
age of 89. He was a member of the faculty for 32 years, retiring in 1978.
After his retirement his colleagues created the William D. Mallam Senior History
Majors Award, which is presented annually at Moving-Up Day. In a campus-wide
memo, President Sullivan said, in part, "When (Professor Mallam) joined
the history-government faculty, at that time combined in one department, he
was the only American historian. He taught the Survey of American History
course for many years and also British history, which brought him in touch
with many English majors. He represented a model of the scholar-citizen, a
model many of our graduates emulate." Memorial gifts may be made to the
Canton Fire Department Ambulance Fund, c/o Joan Newman, 13 Gouverneur Street,
Canton, or to the William D. Mallam History Majors Award, c/o the development
office.
Flu Shots: The Health Service offers flu vaccinations on Thursday, October 30, and Thursday, November 6, 9-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Winning Health Center. No appointment is necessary. A fee of $10 will be billed to student accounts; employees and retirees may pay by cash or check. Other family members are not eligible this year. Health service staff suggest that vaccination is especially important this year, because of the possible return of SARS with the advent of colder weather, and remind everyone to be on the lookout for SARS symptoms: high fever, dry cough, shortness of breath or breathing difficulties. In their early stages, SARS and flu present similar symptoms, and vaccinations against the flu will help medical professionals make correct diagnoses.
India Program Meeting: An information meeting on the academic program in India is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29, Carnegie 112, 7:30 p.m.
Soros Fellowships: Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans support graduate study anywhere in the United States. Candidates must either hold Green Cards or be naturalized citizens or the children of two naturalized citizen parents. Deadline for application is November 1, 2003. For information: Thadine Wight, twig@stlawu.edu or 5991.
