ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tenure and Promotion Consideration: The following faculty members are being considered for tenure and promotion to associate professor by the Professional Standards Committee: Peter Cain, psychology; Marina Llorente, modern languages; Michael Temkin, biology; Elizabeth Regosin, history. Obiora Udechukwu, professor of fine arts, is being considered for tenure. Letters from faculty and staff familiar with the work of these faculty members are vital in the review process. Especially helpful are letters that address the quality of teaching, scholarship and service. Letters should be sent to Dean Grant H. Cornwell, Vilas 103, by Monday, October 14, 2002. Curricula vitae for the candidates are available at the ODY reserve desk and in the dean's office. Letters are used solely for the promotion process; confidentiality will be protected to the extent possible under the law.
Senior Dinner: All members of the Class of 2003 are invited to
the Senior Class Dinner with the Board of Trustees on Thursday, October
17, 6-8 p.m. in Burkman Gymnasium. This is an opportunity to talk with
trustees, to understand who the trustees are and what they do, and to learn
of resources for the senior year and beyond, through the senior class advisor,
class officers, the career center and the alumni office. To indicate your

MapFest: Faculty
who use maps in their courses, or who would like to, are invited to MapFest
'02 on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 4-6 p.m. (come and go) in the Center for Teaching
& Learning, 62 Park Street. Digital map demonstrations included, refreshments

Safety Committee Meeting: Meetings of the Safety Committee are open to all members of the campus community. The first few minutes of each meeting are reserved for anyone to address the committee regarding any safety issues or concerns. Next meeting is Wednesday, October 16, at 3 p.m. in Noble Center 222.
Shenandoah Shakespeare: The Shenandoah Shakespeare company will perform The Merry Wives of Windsor, Macbeth and Love's Labour's Lost in Eben Holden at various times October 21-27. Lecture on Multicultural Societies: Will Kymlicka, professor
of philosophy at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, and a visiting
professor in the nationalism studies program at the Central European University
in Budapest, will speak on Tuesday, October 22, at 4:30 p.m. in Hepburn
218 on the topic "Education for Multicultural Citizenship." Kymlicka studies
the question of minority rights and group representation in multicultural
societies. His areas of interest are liberalism, citizenship, distributive
justice, multiculturalism and nationalism. In his work, he has focused
on such topics as the possible relevance of Western models of multiculturalism
to non-Western countries, particularly those of Eastern Europe and Latin
America, emerging ideas of transnational citizenship, and the possible
conflicts between multiculturalism and distributive justice.
New York Times Available:
Effective today (October 14), two copies of the New York Times are
available daily for perusal in Dana Dining Center.
Book Drive: The Irving Bacheller Society is sponsoring a book drive, through November, for the benefit of Teach for America in Mississippi, where Eileen Fenn '02 is teaching. Textbooks, fiction and leisure reading materials in good condition for grades K-12 are welcomed. Drop-off boxes are located in Noble Center, ODY Library and Brewer Bookstore, the Partridge Den, the Harvest Moon Cafe and Nature's Storehouse. For information: 5125.
Faculty/Staff Basketball: Every Tuesday and Thursday at noon there is half-court pickup basketball for faculty and staff in Burkman Gymnasium, Augsbury Center. For information: 5316, 5427 or 5391.
Lunch Bunch: Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge. Retirees Luncheons: University retirees gather on the second Tuesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge for lunch. Remaining dates for the fall semester are November 12 and December 10. At the November 12 meeting, University Chaplain Kathleen Buckley will speak on "What's Up in the Chapel."
