Announcements
Energy Education Campaign Begins: An energy education campaign
is under way on campus, continuing throughout the fall and winter seasons.
Beginning with
a kick-off event on campus September 29, the campaign follows up on an energy "audit" of
the campus conducted in 2003. In addition to making the campus community aware
of the benefits of saving energy, the campaign also aims to encourage energy-saving
habits, such as turning off lights in unused areas; turning off computers at
the end of the work/study day; unplugging unused appliances; replacing incandescent
light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs; and walking, rather than driving,
to locations on and near campus. Members of the campus community are being
asked to sign a "pledge card," indicating a commitment to those activities.
Members of the Environmental Action Organization will staff a table regularly
in the Student Center where people can sign the energy pledge, and throughout
the semester the community will receive information about these energy-saving
behaviors, as well as others. In February of 2005, a symposium on campus will
include a report on the results of the campaign, plus recommendations for the
future. St. Lawrence's Energy Education Campaign is being conducted with assistance
from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)
Energy Audit Program and Community Energy Services, Inc., of Hermon, New York.
Those organizations also provided assistance for the energy audit of the campus
in 2003. For information: contact Susan Kramer, CESSusan@novocon.net.
Laurentian Leadership Weekend: Alumni volunteers and donors visit campus October 8-10 for an immersion experience in today’s St. Lawrence. The full schedule of events is posted on the University Web site, linked from the home page www.stlawu.edu, and features seminars, colloquia, and campus cultural and athletic events. For information: Lisa Cania, lcania@stlawu.edu.
Tenure and Promotion Considerations: The following faculty members are being considered for tenure and promotion to associate professor by the Professional Standards Committee: Ning Gao, chemistry; Michael Jenkins, economics; Kelley Raab, religious studies; and Laura Rediehs, philosophy. Letters from faculty and staff familiar with the work of the faculty members under consideration are vital in the review process. Especially helpful are letters which speak to the quality of the faculty member's teaching, scholarship and service. For a complete description of the criteria for appointment to tenure and promotion in rank, please consult the material provided on the Academic Affairs Web page through the link “Tenure and Promotion Considerations for Fall 2004.” Letters should be sent to Dean Grant H. Cornwell, Vilas 103, by Monday, October 11, 2004. Curricula vitae for the candidates are available at the ODY reserve desk and in the dean's office. Letters are used solely for the tenure and promotion process; confidentiality will be protected to the extent possible under the law.
911 Emergency Calls: The following is slightly adapted from an e-mail distributed
by Patrick Gagnon, interim director of security and safety, on September
27, 2004: “Recently I was asked to confirm that any campus telephone
can call directly to 911, without delay. This is accurate. You can call 911
or 8-911 in case of emergency and you will be connected directly to the St.
Lawrence County emergency services dispatcher. On occasion, our security
staff receives a call back from the 911 dispatcher to identify the caller’s
building and room location, as the automated information provided to the
911 dispatcher will simply indicate ‘St. Lawrence University.’
“
So, in case of emergency, you have two options: You always may call our office,
5555, to receive assistance. You also may call 911 directly. In either case,
you may be asked your name, phone number and location from where you are
calling, what happened, where it happened, when it happened, and whether
anyone is injured.”
Campus Theft: The following is slightly adapted form an e-mail distributed
by Patrick Gagnon, interim director of security and safety, on September
28, 2004: “Over the weekend [of September 24-26], a University ‘gator’ (used
by facilities operations staff in their campus work) was taken without permission,
hot wired, driven through the
St. Lawrence University golf course and abandoned
in the woods near the course. The ‘gator’ was damaged extensively,
as were the #2 green and the #5 bunker at the course.
“Driving ‘gators’ and golf carts in reckless ways can cause
injury to drivers and pedestrians. If you drive such equipment as part of a campus
job, regularly or for special events, please drive slowly and with care. We have
an investigation under way; I ask anyone who might have information that would
help us identify the person(s) responsible to contact me at 5555.”
