New Student Center Opens Today: A Web site with photos and plans for the new facility has been created. Check http://www.stlawu.edu/ucomm/student_center.html for a Guide to the New Student Center; questions and answers; and a photo gallery featuring photos of the past 18 months of construction.
Hockey Grants-in-Aid to Continue: St. Lawrence will continue to offer grants-in-aid to players in Division I men's and women's hockey, following a vote on January 12 at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) convention in Nashville, Tenn. NCAA Division III colleges and universities rejected a proposal that would have disallowed grants-in-aid, effective August 2008, at St. Lawrence and seven other schools that compete in Division I in one or more sports.

Libraries Hours: During the spring semester, Owen D. Young (ODY) and Launders Science libraries will observe the following regular hours:

Fitness Classes: The Spring 2004 Session I Fitness Class calendar is posted on the Fitness Club Web site, http://www.stlawu.edu/sports/fitness%20center/multipurpose%20sp%2004.html. Classes begin January 26 and will run for six weeks, ending the week of March 5. New classes this spring: Intermediate Line Dancing, Step Aerobics, ClimbinGroovin, Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing. Lunch Bunch: Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge. Retirees Luncheons: University retirees gather on the second Tuesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge for lunch. Dates for the spring semester are February 10, March 9, April 13 and May 11. At the February 10 meeting, Sally Vrooman will speak about the Liberty Partnership Program, in which she is involved. Achievements
Assistant Professor of Chemistry Ning Gao has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation to study the air quality of the Lake Champlain Basin. The grant will be used to cover the costs of research, including undergraduate student research assistants and summer interns.

Chapin Professor of Geology and Mineralogy Mark Erickson and two of his former students, Booth Platt Jr. '00 and Douglas H. Jennings '93, are co-authors of the article "Holocene Fossil Oribatid Mite Biofacies as Proxies of Paleohabitat at the Hiscock Site, Byron, New York" in the Bulletin of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences, Vol. 37 (2003). The research was completed with support from the James S. Street Student Geology Fund.
