Tenure Consideration: Associate Professor of Biology Joseph Erlichman is being considered for tenure at St. Lawrence by the Professional Standards Committee. Letters from faculty and staff are solicited on his behalf (those who wrote letters when he was under consideration for promotion last spring are invited to revise or update those letters if they wish). Letters should be submitted to Dean Grant H. Cornwell, Vilas 103, no later than Monday, September 29, 2003. A curriculum vitae for Erlichman is available at the ODY reserve desk and in the Dean's office. Letters are used solely for the promotion process; confidentiality will be protected to the extent possible under the law.

Tenure and promotion considerations for 2003-2004: The following faculty members are being considered for tenure and promotion to associate professor by the Professional Standards Committee: Ilia Casanova-Marengo, modern languages and literatures; Jeffery Greathouse, chemistry; Robert Cowser, English; and Karl Schonberg, government. Letters from faculty and staff familiar with the work of the faculty members under consideration are vital in the review process. Especially helpful are letters that address the quality of their teaching, scholarship and service. For a complete description of the criteria for appointment to tenure and promotion in rank, please consult Section III E (pages 59-61) of the Faculty Handbook, also available at the Academic Affairs Web site. Driver Authorization:
To drive a University vehicle, faculty, staff and students must complete the appropriate form - whether as first-time applicants or renewing - found at http://web.stlawu.edu/security/sluvehicleapp.htm. All students, and all faculty and staff planning to operate a 15-passenger van, must attend a driver-awareness program. This is offered several times in September:

Information Session: Lisa Rattray, admissions officer for Duke University's Nicholas School, which specializes in environmental sciences, will lead an informal information session on Monday, September 29, at noon, in Career Services and Leadership Education, Richardson Hall Ground Floor, to discuss graduate opportunities as well as undergraduate courses available at the Duke Marine Lab. Soros Fellowships: Soros Fellowships for New Americans support 30 individuals a year for up to two years of graduate study in any subject anywhere in the U.S. A fellowship provides $20,000 maintenance and half tuition wherever the fellow attends. Candidates must be either holders of green cards, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized citizen parents. The deadline to apply for the fellowship is November 1. Goldwater Scholarship: Students interested in careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. In April 2004, scholarships will be awarded to students who will be college juniors or seniors during the 2004-2005 academic year. In order to be considered for an award, a student must be nominated by his or her institution. The deadline for receipt of all 2004 nominations is February 2, 2004. Passport Photos: Students and faculty who need passport-sized photos for passports, visas and study abroad programs may have them taken by Carol Barclay, photographer, at 64 ½ Miner Street, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Other times are available by appointment: 379-9538. Cost is $10 for 4 photos, $16 for 10 photos, $25 for 20 photos.

Professional Semester Applications for Spring 2004: Applications for the Spring 2004 Professional Semester are due by Wednesday, Oct. 1, and must be accompanied by an up-to-date transcript and letter of recommendation from a field supervisor. Application forms may be picked up in the education office in Atwood Hall. Seniors interested in student teaching in the spring as graduate students in the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program must also apply. Achievements
A genus and species of trace fossil newly described by Chapin Professor of Geology J. Mark Erickson and Timothy D. Bouchard '03 has been named by them in honor of the University. The new fossil organism trace is called Sanctum laurentiensis Erickson and Bouchard and is described by the two in a paper published in the July 2003 issue of the Journal of Paleontology (Vol. 77, No. 5). The fossil organisms are from the Ordovician period (approximately 510 million years ago) and are found in Ohio.
Field hockey Head Coach Fran Grembowicz has been inducted into her alma mater's athletic hall of fame, for her contributions there as a field hockey player. The 1976 field hockey team of Castleton State College in Vermont - including Grembowicz - was inducted into the college's Athletic Hall of Fame on September 13.
