Comprehensive Fee Increase: St. Lawrence University's comprehensive fee will increase by 5 percent for next year, with room and board remaining equal to 2002-2003 levels and tuition increasing by $1,705. The Board of Trustees set the fees at its winter meeting, held February 22 on campus, as follows:

Lectureship Nominations: Nominations for the 2003-04 Piskor Lectureship must be submitted to Dorothy Limouze, fine arts (dlimouze@stlawu.edu) by noon on Monday, March 3. Criteria and other information are available at the same address.
Award for Woman in Creative Leadership: Nominations are being accepted for the Emily Eaton Hepburn Women's Award, which recognizes outstanding women in the University community who have created learning opportunities through imaginative leadership. This award will presented at Moving-Up Day. Nomination letters should be sent to Peg Cornwell, pcornwell@stlawu.edu, Leadership Academy, Hulett-Jencks, by Friday, March 14.
Award for Junior Woman: Nominations are being accepted for the Inger Jo Hansen Memorial Citizenship Award, to be presented on Moving-Up Day to a woman of the junior class who best exemplifies the qualities of good citizenship at St. Lawrence. Nomination letters should be sent to Anne Townsend, atownsend@stlawu.edu, Volunteer Center, Hulett-Jencks, by Friday, March 14.
Fitness Center Programs: The fitness center is offering two new programs: massage therapy, Fridays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (for information on costs of sessions: Lynn, 5423), and fitness testing, Tuesdays 10 a.m.-noon (for information: rdurocher@stlawu.edu).
Senior Awards: Nominations are now being accepted for the Douglas M. Brown Senior Award, given by the Alumni Executive Council to a senior woman and man in recognition of a well-rounded academic and co-curricular experience at St. Lawrence. Required Driver Classes: Faculty and staff who wish to drive a University van for class or departmental work are required to take one 90-minute University-sponsored class. The class is being offered once more this semester: Tuesday, March 4, 6 p.m., Noble Center Formal Lounge. Reservations are required; the sign-up sheet is at the main desk in the Noble Center. Workshop in Reporting Child Abuse and Maltreatment: A program on how to identify cases of child abuse and maltreatment and report them to authorities will be held Tuesday, March 25, 4-6:45 p.m. in Atwood Room 106. The program fulfills the training requirements established for nurses, physicians, teachers, school administrators, school counselors and other licensed or certified professionals. Fee is $20, payable in the education department, Atwood Hall. For information: 5861.
Lunch Bunch: The Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge. - Dana Professor of Fine Arts Obiora Udechukwu and his wife, Ada Udechukwu, were the subjects of a February 20 story in the Greensboro, N.C., News and Record. The couple's art and poetry are featured in the exhibition "Lyrical Lines" at Guilford College, where they will be in residence for a program titled "Igbo Visions: Art, Literature and African Cultures' Values."
- Associate Professor of Economics Alison Del Rossi was interviewed for a February 18 story on Minnesota Public Radio's "Marketplace Morning Report," about "stealth taxes" proposed in the New York State budget, of fees and fines, rather than actual taxes.
- Visiting Instructor of Sociology Ross Glover, co-editor of the book Collateral Language: A User's Guide to America's New War, was interviewed on CNN on February 8.
- Collateral Language: A User's Guide to America's New War was the subject of an editorial in the February 6 Toronto Star, by columnist Antonia Zerbisias.
- Associate Professor of Physics Aileen O'Donoghue was quoted in a February 4 story on the Newhouse News Service newswire, about the intersection of science and religion; among the papers carrying the story were the New Orleans Times-Picayune and the Washington Post.
- Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Terry Cowdrey was quoted in a February 4 story in USA Today, about how colleges have revamped or retooled applications, especially in attempts to detect the "packaging" of applicants.
- An explanation of "photographic memory" by Professor of Psychology Alan Searleman appeared in the "ask the experts" feature of the ScientificAmerican.com Web site on February 3.
- Professor of Canadian Studies Joseph Jockel was quoted in stories in the February 2 editions of The Boston Globe and The Montreal Gazette, on how Canada feels about a possible war with Iraq, and the debate over whether or not to join with the U.S. in that effort.
- St. Lawrence is included in an article titled "Learning Communities and Liberal Education" in the January-February 2003 issue of Academe, a journal of the American Association of University Professors. The article examines how four institutions, including St. Lawrence, have organized curricula to "encourage coherence and collaboration in liberal learning." Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs Grant Cornwell '79 is quoted.
- J. Kimball Gannon '24's bequest of royalties from his compositions, including "I'll Be Home For Christmas," was included in a January 31, 2003, story in The Chronicle of Higher Education, about unusual gifts that colleges and universities have received.
- The January 30 online edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education included an excerpt from an article in the 2002 issue of The New England Theatre Journal written by Associate Professor of Speech and Theatre Andrea Nouryeh, on factors that combined to help stifle the voices of black women who were playwrights in the 1930s.
- Assistant Professor of Philosophy Laura Rediehs' essay on evil, included in the book Collateral Language, was mentioned in a story in the London, England, Independent on January 26, about books published on the subject of the war on terror.
- Professor of Canadian Studies Joseph T. Jockel was quoted in a January
25 story in the Buffalo News, on the feelings Canadians have experienced
since the deaths of four Canadian soldiers because of actions by the American
military.
