Promotion Consideration: The following faculty members are being considered for promotion to professor by the Professional Standards Committee: Valerie Lehr, government/gender studies; Larry French, chemistry. Joseph Erlichman, biology, is being considered for promotion to associate professor and will be considered for tenure in Fall 2003. Faculty and staff familiar with the work of the faculty members under consideration are vital in the review process. Especially helpful are letters that speak to the quality of the faculty member's teaching, scholarship and service. Letters should be sent to Dean Grant H. Cornwell, Vilas 103, by February 10, 2003. Curricula vitae for the candidates are available at the ODY reserve desk and in the dean's office. Letters are used solely for the promotion process; confidentiality will be protected to the extent possible under the law.

Mortensen Campus Visit: Viggo Mortensen '80, star of the current hit film The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, will make several public appearances on campus on Friday, February 28, and Saturday, March 1, in conjunction with a February 28-April 5 exhibition of his photographs in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery. Attendance at each event requires a free ticket:
Friday, February 28: Opening reception for the exhibition "Signlanguage: Photographs by Viggo Mortensen," 7:30-8:30 p.m. and 9-10 p.m., Brush Gallery.
Saturday, March 1: Poetry reading, 2:30 p.m., Gulick Theatre; book signing, 3-7 p.m., Brush Gallery; screening of the extended version of The Lord Of The Rings, Part I: The Fellowship Of The Ring, Gulick Theatre, 7:30-11 p.m., and The Underground, 7:45-11:15 p.m., each with introductory remarks by Mortensen.
In order to accommodate as many people as possible for participation in at least one event, tickets will be made available as follows:
- Any one person may request up to two tickets for one event only.
- Tickets will be available for in-person pick-up on Monday, February 17, beginning at 8 a.m., at the E.J. Noble University Center main desk.
- Tickets will be available to St. Lawrence University students, faculty, staff and retirees, and members of the community, through 5 p.m. on Friday, February 21. After that date and time, tickets will be available to anyone for any of the events on a first-come, first-served basis.
- At all times, those who desire tickets must go to the E.J. Noble University Center main desk in person; identification will be required. No telephone requests will be accepted. Also, please note that no waiting list will be established and tickets will not be mailed out.

Health Fair: The Employee Assistance Program and St. Lawrence's human resources staff are hosting a health and information fair Wednesday, February 12, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Newell Field House lobby. Various screenings will be available, some at a minimal cost. For information: 386-2207.

Passport Photos: Students and faculty who need passport-sized photos for passports, visas and study abroad programs may have them taken by Carol Barclay, photographer, at 64 1/2 Miner Street, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Other times are available by appointment; call 379-9538. Cost is $10 for 4 photos, $16 for 10 photos, $25 for 20 photos.

Golf Lessons: The St. Lawrence Golf Center, 72 East Main St., will offer free golf instruction to faculty, staff and students, on Tuesdays, February 11-March 11, at 7 p.m., and Wednesdays, February 12-March 12, at noon. To register: 229-7888.

Outdoor Program Activities: The Outdoor Program is offering beginner clinics in several outdoor skills between now and Spring Break: kayaking, telemark skiing, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Numerous activities are also scheduled for Munro Climbing Wall. Times and requirements vary. For information: 5016. A Spring Break trip to Smith Rock, Oregon, is planned, with a deposit due February 24; for information, 5377.

Lunch Bunch: Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge. Remaining dates for the spring semester are March 5, April 2 and May 7. Reservations must be made by noon the preceding day with Mickey Williams, 386-8781.

Retirees Luncheons: University retirees gather on the second Tuesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge for lunch. Dates for the spring semester are February 11, March 11, April 8 and May 13. At the Feb. 11 meeting, Anne Townsend, project director for the David Garner Center for Collegiate Volunteerism, will speak on the work of the center at St. Lawrence. Reservations must be made by noon the preceding day with Mickey Williams, 386-8781, or Wanda Renick, 386-3474.

Achievements
A research paper by Assistant Professor of Chemistry Ning Gao and a former student has been accepted for publication by a leading academic journal. Nathan Gabrial Armatas '02 and Gao researched the mass balance assessment of mercury in Lake Champlain extensively while Armatas was a student. Their paper on the topic has been accepted by the Journal of American Geophysics Union. Armatas is a doctoral student in the chemistry program at Syracuse University.

Students in Associate Professor of Anthropology John Barthelme's course Anthropology 410, Zoo Archaeology (Faunal Analysis) have received the approval of the New York State Museum in Albany to study unidentified prehistoric faunal collections -- bones and teeth -- as part of their course work.
