Change in Graduate Tuition Remission Policy: According to a December 13, 2002, letter from Controller Carol Gable, "In order to comply with the Internal Revenue Code, the University must modify its procedures for assessing taxes on graduate course tuition remission. As of January 1, 2003, St. Lawrence University employees may receive annual tuition remission for graduate courses up to the value of $5,250 without any impact on their taxable income. Employees (who) receive annual tuition remission in excess of $5,250 will be taxed on the excess amount. Since the current cost of a graduate course is $1,650, this means that an employee may take three graduate courses in a year without any impact on taxable income."
