Special Assistant to the New York Six Consortium
With support from the Mellon Foundation, the six premier liberal arts colleges in upstate New York – Colgate, Hamilton, Hobart and William Smith, Skidmore, St. Lawrence and Union – seek a project manager for the newly formed New York Six consortium. The project manager’s work will focus on 1) benchmarking campus services such as insurance and risk management, dining, and other outsourced services; 2) exploring joint purchasing options; 3) investigating possibilities for environmentally sustainable operations such as recycling and alternative energy sources; and 4) supporting technological collaboration. While the New York Six colleges have distinctive institutional missions and well defined institutional identities, they share common commitments to liberal education, intercultural understanding, teaching and scholarship, and close working relationships between students and faculty. The presidents of the New York Six understand the opportunities for partnership and collaboration among their campuses, and have determined that the goals of the consortial relationships will help our schools to 1) manage costs, 2) collaborate in order to enhance our ability to address common challenges, and 3) add value to the educational experiences of students.
Due to its central location, Hamilton College will serve as the hub for the consortium, with the project manager based there. There will be significant activity on each campus in conjunction with the project manager’s work — gathering data, responding to questions and surveys about operations, and convening staff, for example — and each college will assign an appropriate staff member, such as the director of institutional research, to coordinate these activities. Working in consultation with presidents, chief financial officers, directors of information technology, and others on each campus, the successful candidate will look into the structures and services of other consortia, identify business costs and operations that might be handled consortially, and assess the feasibility of various areas of collaboration.
This is a full-time administrative position with benefits, for a one-year, non-renewable term beginning July 1, 2009. The successful candidate will have experience in qualitative research methods and strong familiarity with the mission of a selective liberal arts college. Some knowledge of consortial relationships is desired. Other qualifications include a demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty and staff, excellent written and oral communication skills, a proven ability to work independently in developing a project and seeing it to completion, and a working knowledge of academic administration. The Special Assistant to the Presidents will report directly to the President of Hamilton College, with regular communication among the New York Six presidents. A master’s degree is required.
Interested applicants should send a resume, letter of interest and contact information for three professional references to apply@hamilton.edu. Consideration of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
