Since 1996, Daniel F. Sullivan has served as the 17th
president of St. Lawrence University.
A 1965 mathematics graduate of St. Lawrence, Dr. Sullivan
received the Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University where he was
an Edward John Noble Fellow and a National Science Foundation Graduate
Fellow. His research and scholarship have been focused in science and
mathematics education, the sociology of science and medicine, and the
sociology of organizations.
Over the past decade, St. Lawrence University has experienced a renaissance that is characterized by support for excellence across the curriculum, a commitment to the quality and increased size of the faculty, a focus on well-balanced, student-centered campus life and an historic investment in renovated and new facilities. St. Lawrence today has unprecedented energy, momentum that carries the University forward to greater accomplishment and reputation. The goal has been constant: to improve those programs that relate most directly to the education of its students.
Since 1996, the University has enriched the academic experience with seven new majors and 24 new faculty positions, expanded student-faculty research, and added four new international programs. It has invested over $180 million in new or renovated facilities to support student achievement. It has completed one comprehensive campaign, raising $132.2 million, exceeding goal; and launched Momentum St. Lawrence, which will raise $200 million by December 31, 2010. Over 65% of this goal has been met. It has doubled admissions applications in the last decade, reaching over 5,400 applications for the Class 2012 and reducing the acceptance rate to 33%.
St. Lawrence anticipates the future with the strongest foundation ever, with high energy, broad support and absolute conviction that the work its employees do as educators, whether among the teaching faculty or the professional and support staff, is the best, most worthwhile work that can be done.
President Sullivan has announced his plans to retire effective June 30, 2009. A search for his successor has begun.
