PHOTOS BY MARK KLETT '74 IN SLU'S BRUSH GALLERY
CANTON - "Time Studies," an exhibition of photographs by Mark Klett '74, will be in the
Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from Monday, January 23, through
Saturday, February 25. Klett will give a lecture on his work on Monday, February 6, at
7 p.m.; it is open to the public, free of charge. The exhibition and his lecture are part
of the University's Sesquicentennial celebration.
The exhibition includes panoramic works from a project called "Yosemite in Time," a
collaboration of Klett, writer Rebecca Solnit and photographer Byron Wolfe. The
project "revisited and re-photographed sites of historic photographs made in Yosemite
National Park," according to Klett.
Also included are works from a project called "Time Studies," in which images answer
the question, "If photographs depict a moment in time, how long is a moment?" Klett
says, "A photograph is usually metered in fractions of a second, but many of these
images were exposed over periods ranging from 10 minutes to two days, recording
phenomena difficult to experience as a single or discrete event. The result is
another perspective regarding duration or rates of change."
Best known as a landscape photographer, Klett earned his St. Lawrence degree in
geology and was the first student in that discipline at the University to prepare a
senior thesis; his topic was "On the Confluence of Science and Art." After graduating
with Phi Beta Kappa honors, he worked in the field of geologic mapping while earning
his Master of Fine Arts degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo and
launching his career in the arts. His first book, Second View: Rephotographic Survey
Project, examined the sights, techniques and artistic intentions of early landscape
photographers of the American West, and brought Klett national acclaim. A Regents
Professor at Arizona State University, Klett was awarded an honorary degree by
St. Lawrence in 2004.
