SLU Prof's Book Translates Supernatural Chinese Stories
A new book by St. Lawrence University Craig Professor of English Sidney Sondergard is the first complete English translation of short stories by 18th-century Chinese writer Pu Songling. Eventually, almost 500 stories will be published in English translations by Sondergard; the first two volumes of the six-volume set, Strange Tales from Liaozhai, will be published by Jain Publishing this fall. They feature illustrations by St. Lawrence graduates.

'Music For Brownbaggers' Presented At St. Lawrence Chapel
Organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor will present a series of recitals in St. Lawrence University's Gunnison Memorial Chapel this fall, called "Music for Brownbaggers." Each of the events is open to the public, free of charge, and will be held during the noon hour. Those attending are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to enjoy while listening to the music.

SLU Football Team Has 'Guest Coaches' For Home Games
When St. Lawrence University's football team hits Weeks Field for home games this fall, they'll have support from a special coaching squad: a member of the faculty or staff serves as a "guest coach" for each home game in a program started in 2006 by Head Coach Chris Phelps. Full Story

Middle East Challenges Topic For Forum At St. Lawrence
"Middle East Challenges and the Next Administration" is the topic of the next Contemporary Issues Forum at St. Lawrence University, on Monday, September 15, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. The event, featuring speakers Geoffrey Kemp and Dennis Ross, is open to the public, free of charge.

New Fund-Raising Records Set By St. Lawrence University
St. Lawrence University set a new gift income record for the third straight year, with gift income totaling $23,885,029 for fiscal year 2007-2008, which ended June 30, 2008. The total is a 4 percent increase from 2006-07, also a record-setting year.

McKibben will be on campus on Thursday, September 4, for three events, all open to the public. The appearances are also the first events in this year's Contemporary Issues Forum.

15 Percent Of Energy Purchased By SLU Is 'Renewable'
St. Lawrence University has purchased 3,280 megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable energy for the 2008-2009, or about 15 percent of its annual consumption. This purchase will provide 100 percent of the energy consumed in the Student Center and 50 percent of the energy consumed in the Johnson Hall of Science.

Kevin Szott '86 Leads U.S. Delegation At Paralympics
Kevin Szott '86, a three-time U.S. Paralympic gold medalist, has been named to the U.S. presidential delegation welcoming athletes from around the globe to the Paralympic Games in Beijing. Szott, a regional sales manager for The Hartford, is one of eight former Paralympic athletes who will represent the Office of the President at the opening ceremonies on September 6.

A paper by Kevin Keepper '08 has been selected for the Undergraduate Prize in the 2008 New York Conference on Asian Studies Marleigh Grayer Ryan Writing Prize Competition. The paper, "Intellectual Property Rights In China: Capacity and Incentive for Proper Enforcement in China," was written for a class taught by Assistant Professor of Government Grace Huang.
