St. Lawrence To Award Honorary Degrees To Three
United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the Reverend Peter J. Gomes and poet, publisher and author Chase Twichell will be awarded honorary degrees by St. Lawrence University at its Commencement, on Sunday, May 16 at 10 a.m. All three will offer remarks at the ceremony.

Spring Break Includes Study And Service

SLU's Own DIY Network: Students Build Computers For Lab
When Associate Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Ed Harcourt said he wanted his computer science students to "get their feet wet and their hands dirty," he wasn't kidding. The dozen students in the fall 2009 course High-Performance Linux Computing Systems, co-taught with Assistant Professor Richard Sharp, built 55 computers for three labs, from scratch, motherboards to monitors.

Winners Of Math Jeopardy For $500, Alex!
St. Lawrence University's Math Jeopardy team took first place in a competition held February 19, as part of a two-day mathematics symposium held at Clarkson University. The team beat competitors from Clarkson, SUNY Potsdam, Nazareth College, St. John Fisher College and SUNY Brockport at the event.

Prof. Chiarenzelli Presenting Series Of Talks
Associate Professor of Geology Jeffrey Chiarenzelli '81 gave the Science Today lecture at SUNY Oswego February 3, on environmental forensics and possible methods of restoration on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, primarily with regard to persistent organic pollutants and biogenic hydrocarbons, such as crude oil and various other forms of petroleum spills.

Psychology Honor Society Inducts 18 Students
Psi Chi, the psychology honor society, inducted 18 new members recently. To be eligible for membership, students must have an overall average of at least 3.3; a psychology average of at least 3.4 (based on a minimum of four psychology courses completed at St. Lawrence) and be in the top 35 percent of their class.
